Noll not interested in history
United Press International
MIAMI — As enjoyable as the
season has been so far, Pittsburgh
Steelers Coach Chuck Noll will re
member little else other than Sun
day’s Super Bowl against the Dallas
Cowboys.
It is not because Noll is worried
about securing his place in football
history as the first coach to win a
third Super Bowl because he has no
such ego demands. It is simply the
next challenge, the one that will stay
with him until next season.
“To me, it’s just that you always
remember the last game you played
in,’ Noll said Monday after the
Steelers arrived in Miami. “I’Ve
never been a history buff. It’s today
and tomorrow.”
After being supplied with a new
jet when their charter was snowed
in at Chicago, the Steelers flew from
the cold of Pittsburgh to the 70-
degree temperatures of Miami
Monday, arriving a few hours ahead
of the Cowboys.
Noll said his team would have to
make up for time lost last week
when the Steelers were forced to
practice indoors. A sheet of ice cov
ering the field at Three Rivers
Stadium sent the Steelers to the
University of Pittsburgh fieldhouse
for restricted workouts last Thurs
day, Friday and Saturday.
“We worked mostly on running,
things that didn’t require a lot of
space,” Noll said. “We needed to
get down here so we could get out in
the air, run a bit and throw the ball.
Tuesday we’ll emphasize the pass
ing game, which we haven’t been
able to work on.
“We tried to work out in the
stadium last week but all the water
you saw in last week’s game froze
and it was like an ice rink.
With quarterback Terry Brad
shaw having his best year, the
Steelers this season emphasized the
pass more than ever before. Brad
shaw completed 56.3 percent of his
passes for a career-high 2,915 yards
to become the first Steeler ever to
win a passing title. His NFL high 28
touchdown passes was the highest
total since 1970.
The Steelers’ explosive passing
game is one of the things Noll points
to as a difference between this team
and the Pittsburgh clubs that won
back-to-back Super Bowls after the

MIAMI — If you can believe
those closest to football, the
Pittsburgh Steelers will rout the
Dallas Cowboys in Sunday’s Super
Bowl XIII — but don’t count on it
changing the odds.
The predictions were published
Monday by The Miami News, which
polled 23 National Football League
head coaches. Seventeen picked the
Steelers and 20 predicted the score,
which averaged out for Pittsburgh,
20-15.
The only coaches who picked Dal
las to win were Bud Grant of the
Minnesota Vikings, Bart Starr of the
Green Bay Packers, Bud Wilkinson
of the St. Louis Cardinals, Neill
Armstrong of the Chicago Bears,
Dick Nolan of the New Orleans
Saints and Dick Vermeil of the
Philadelphia Eagles.

74 and 75 seasons. It is also a factor
in making the Steelers a 4 point fa
vorite to beat Dallas.
“We re more balanced offensively
because we’re more efficient throw
ing the ball than tnree and four
years ago, Noll said. “We relied
more on running in the past. This
team also plays with great consis
tency, both emotionally and physi
cally.
“It’s probably the most consistent
team I’ve ever had. And it is a team
that has played well together, which
is tough to measure statistically.”
The kinds of problems that dis
rupted the Steelers last year —
holdouts, walkouts, a slander suit
against Noll -p- never surfaced this
season and the 47year-old coach
knew right from training camp that
this season had the mark of some
thing special.
“This is a happy team, he ex
plained. “I’ve had the most fun I’ve
had in a long time. It started right in
training camp, probably the best
one we’ve had in a long time. That
probably came from watching a
couple of Super Bowls on the tube,
which had a way of whetting their
desire.
“That attitude carried light
through the season into the playoffs.
In fact, our intensity in the playoffs
has been very good.
