Press in limbo over decisioi
United Press International
WASHINGTON — A journalist s
right to protect the confidentiality of
sources remains in limbo, says
Myron Farber, the New York Times’
reporter who spent 39 days in jail for
revising to turn over his notes to a
judge.
Farber was reacting to the Su
preme Court's refusal Monday to re
view contempt convictions imposed
on him and on the Times for the re
porter’s refusal to allow a New Jersey
judge to inspect his files about a
murder trial.
The court s action leaves reporters
across the country "in a state of
limbo about their ability “to pre
serve the confidentiality of their
sources and at the verv least to re
ceive a full and fair hearing," Farber
said.
"It is imperative for a free press to
have the Supreme Court rule on the
critical issues raised in this case.
Times publisher Arthur Ochs
Sulzberger added.
State shield law's give journalists a
privilege to protect sources.
Sulzberger said Farber dill
reporting under the full guan
a shield law passed by theNtiJ
sr\ legislature — but laterii
by N ew Jersey judges.
