Concerning farm women’s need to work, Texas A&M sociologist Dr. Elizabeth Maret said Friday, “The people that live in these areas have to drive to buy their groceries, market their products and care for their sick. Rising costs affect them like they do anyone else. Urban assumptions about the conservatism of rural areas are also false, Maret said. They are no more conservative than anyone else and in some cases, they are more liberal. “Rural areas have never succumbed to the idea that a woman’s place is only in the home. I believe you have more of this notion in urban areas, she added. The sociologist said rural women frequently are ignored by Ameri can industry because companies think they don’t want to leave the farm and don’t need the money. The study, however, indicated many farm incomes were at or below poverty level and the only reason rural women did not seek outside employment was because they traditionally were unsuc cessful at finding jobs. The two-year study, which Maret conducted with graduate student Lillian Chenoweth, included more than 1,500 women living in rural areas. An area with a population of 2,500 residents or less was consid ered rural. Award-winning film shown Werner Herzog’s “Everyman for Himself and God Against All (The Mystery of Kaspar Hauser) is the first film in the New Ger man Cinema to play in the Texas A&M University area. The MSC Arts Committee will show the film tonight at 8 p.m. in the MSC Basement Coffeehouse. Tickets are available at the box office in Rudder Tower for $1. “Every Man for Himself and God Against All” is based on a historical event. One day in the 1860s a young man named Kas par Hauser appeared in a town in Germany. He could not speak and was barely able to stand. Taken in by the townspeople, he was taught to speak, read and write. As mysteriously as he first appeared, he was murdered. spent most of his life in institu tions. He brings the character to life in almost magical terms. The New German Cinema is composed of directors whose works have come into promi nence in the ’70s. With Herzog, such directors as Fassbinder and Wenders have made this the most exciting time in German Cinema since the expressionism of the late ’20s. WERNER HERZOG Bruno S., a non-actor who por trays Hauser, has a background similar to the character he plays. He was abandoned as a child and Herzog’s films are noted for unusual locales and techniques, while the movement as a whole is marked by a formal, distant aesthetic approach. The film won the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festi val in 1975 and runs 110 min utes. Brezhnev said such action woidd be viewed as a matter affecting Russia’s security interests. New anti-shah violence broke out in parts of Iran. Reports reaching the Iranian capital of Tehran Satur day said troops and demonstrators clashed in several sections of the country, leaving at least three pro testors dead and two others wounded. Casualty reports from some areas were not available. The Soviet Union, Brezhnev said, "which maintains traditional good neighbor relations with Iran, states resolutely that it is against any foreign interference in the internal affairs of Iran by anyone, in any form and under any pretext.” The Soviet leader said his nation, which borders Iran to the north, views the current unrest in Iran as “a purely internal affair and the questions involved in them shoidd be decided by the Iranians them selves. “Any interference, especially mil itary interference, in the affairs of Iran — a state which directly bor ders on the Soviet Union — would be regarded by the U.S.S.R. as a matter affecting its security inter ests,” Brezhnev said in a special statement in Pravda’s Sunday edi tion. The Communist Party newspaper carried the text of Brezhnev’s re sponse to a Pravda question about his assessment of foreign press re ports “on interference by Western powers, especially the United States, in the events in Iran and even the possibility of military intervention by them.” Brezhnev replied: “What puts one on guard is the fact that officials of the states concerned actually do not deny such reports. “If they deny attempts to inter fere in Iran’s internal affairs — as was done recently by the U.S. pres ident — they right away make res ervations which do not exclude the possibility of such interference under an appropriate excuse." The United States has said in powerless to intervene in theeventi in Iran but Brezhnev’s statement^ cused on what he termed American refusal to exclude the pos sibility of action to save the shall he were in danger of being over thrown.
