Medical re- irchers at Texas A&M University [ waiting for Federal Drug Ad- nistration approval to begin test- i human volunteers. jesearch leader George C.Y. )u, head of medical pharmacol- at Texas A&M, says demethy- d carbachol, or DMC, has led to be as good as other drugs won the market in tests with dogs it developed glaucoma. DMC also has the added benefit of producting few of the undesirable effects such as eye irritation and pupil contraction, adds Chiou. Chiou and graduate student John Liu also want to explore a combined dosage of DMC and another drug already on the market, timolol. Each has reduced side effects, but works in a different manner. The researchers believe tests could show that a combined dosage to be better since results from re duced doses of each drug could be obtained with few if any side effects. Glaucoma is caused by buildup of pressure in the fluid of the eye. Un treated, the pressure eventually deadens the optic nerve head, re sulting in blindness. Regular eye checkups arid atten tion to such symptoms as sore eyes and blurred vision will help detect the disease. A simple medical test can confirm it. Although glaucoma usually occurs in persons over age 40, Chiou says it can develop in people as young as 20.
