Saturn, the rings around thepl^
Uranus are not made of ice
but are probably some sort
rocklike material.
Using reflected sunlight,
tronomers at the California Instiy
of Technology last week recej
the first direct picture of the nei
discovered rings around thephr^
The picture confirmed thev
full rings of material and there
peared to he no other extraneo
material circling the planet, the
tronomers said. The studies of||
spectrum of light from the
showed no evidence of either^
ice or ammonia ice in the rings,
Scientists said that was unn
-since the rings of Saturn showi
siderable water ice.
The rings of Uranus, the seve
planet from the sun, were fintd
covered by several
groups of astronomers whentl
light from a distant star
hind Uranus was found to
and on as it passed behind theriii!
Five main rings were found»)
radii ranging from nearly 27J)
miles to more than 30,000milesi
widths from 1.8 miles to 60 mil
They are narrow compared
rings of Saturn which have widths
about 30,000 miles.
The picture of the veryfaintrii
was the final result of a conijj
procedure, in which datafroms
eral scans of the planet were tra
formed into a television-typep
tore of the rings by computer, sda
tists said.
The scientists, who obtained
picture when the planet was 1.61
lion miles from Earth, werest
