Fighter taking food
not army, to Nicaragua
United Press International
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. —
Former Marine Guy Gabaldon says
he’s now planning to take food and
medicine to Nicaragua instead of his'
100 man army to fight Communism
in the central American nation.
“I’m telling my boys to hold off,
but keeping them on alert,” Gabal
don said Tuesday. T’ve changed
plans and will take medicine and
food instead of armed forces. ”
Gabaldon, 52, who is credited
with capturing 2,000 Japanese
troops in World War II, placed an
advertisement in a local newspaper
last week announcing he was seek
ing recruits “to fight Communist
takeover in Central America.”
But Gabaldon said he changed his
plans after making a trip to Costa
Rica and talking with refugees from
Nicaragua.
“It’s a real mess down there,” he
said. “High school kids and women
are bearing arms against (Nicara
guan President Anastasio) Somoza’s
troops. It would be necessary to
fight them and I won’t let my men
shoot women and children.
Gabaldon said he may reconsider
his decision not to take troops to

Nicaragua if Fidel Castro leads an
invasion of the embattled country.
“I will not fight as a Somoza sol
dier,” Gabaldon said. “But you can’t
fight Communism now without
fighting on his side. Somoza’s troops
are killing too many women and
children.”
Gabaldon, who said he quickly
signed up 100 persons willing to as
sist him in his original venture, said
it would take “thousands” to fight an
invasion led by Castro.
“I will take them all if Castro in
vades,” he said. “If Nicaragua falls,
Costa Rica will go too and there goes
all of Central Amerca. As it stands,
we re doing nothing to fight Com
munism there.”
Gabaldon said when he arrived in
Costa Rica his life was threatened by
soldiers who accused him of sup
porting Somoza.
“The anti-Somoza people tried to
do me in, he said. “I had no idea
the publicity which preceded me
had me pegged as a Somoza suppor
ter. I’m not.”
Gabaldon said he would spend
this week seeking donations of food
and medical supplies to take to
Nicaragua. He said he would deliver
the items himself.
Meanwhile, U.S. Attorney R. E.
Thompson said his office is continu
ing to investigate whether Cabal-
don’s recruitment effort has violated
federal laws.
