Ags finish second
in softball tourney
By PAIGE BEASLEY
The Fifth Annual Texas A&M In
vitational Softball Tournament
ended Saturday with Texas A&M
taking second behind Texas Wo
man’s University. TWU won in a 7-0
decision with All-America Kathy
Arendsen on the mound. Arendsen
struck out 13 Aggies, giving up one
walk and three hits to Cindy Gough,
Tony Fortier and Dana Thiessen.
Texas A&M, the defending tour
nament champions, won all three
matches Friday in pool play. The
Aggies got off to a good start with a
5-3 win over the University of Texas
at Arlington. The winning pitcher,
Sami Evans, gave up three runs on
10 hits. Leading batters for Texas
A&M were Toni Hymel with two
hits and Evans with two hits and
three RBI’s.
In the second round of pool play,
freshman Shannon Murray led the
Aggies to a 4-0 win over Trinity.
Murray struck out 11 batters and al
lowed only three hits. Leading bat
ters for the Aggies were Rhonda
Reese and Karen Guerrero, each
having two hits.
Pool play continued as Texas
A&M came from behind in the
seventh inning with a 4-3 victory
over Sam Houston State. In the bot
tom of the seventh with bases
loaded, a wild pitch allowed Mary
Lou Wargo to score the winning run
for Texas A&M. Evans and Reese
were leading batters with two hits
each.
Single elimination began Satur
day. Murray pitched a no-hitter to
give Texas A&M an uncontested
victory over West Texas State Uni
versity. Murray was also credited
witii 10 strikeouts and the 10-0 win.
Texas A&M met Sam Houston
again and it was not until the
seventh inning that the Aggies
scored the decisive run. In the top
of the seventh, Murray and Evans
were on base with Glorian Motal at
bat. Motal got a base hit, driving in
Murray for the only run of the
game.
This put Texas A&M into the
championship game where the Ag
gies gained the second place spot
behind TWU, the defending state
and regional champion.
Softball action will continue Fri
day when the Aggies travel to TWU
'in DMiton. 4 * ’
Throwing strikes for the Aggies in last weekend’s Texas A&M
Invitational Softball Tournament is Shannon Murry. The
freshman struck out 11 batters and allowed only three hits as
the Aggies defeated Trinity 4-0. Texas A&M finished second
behind Texas Women’s University.
