Despite estimates that four out of every 1,000 persons could die within minutes of being stung, cur rent laws allow only doctors and nurses to give shots of life-saving epinephrine. More than 100 paralysis deaths are believed caused by reactions to stings in the United States each year and doctors gathered at the National Institute of Health Thursday to check on the availability and effec tiveness of treatment of hyper- allergic persons. “The venom of insects such as yel low jackets contains an exquisite number of potent substances,” said Dr. John Pisano of the NIH Heart, Lung and Blood Institute. “The venom from one insect can kill a rat. ” Dr. Claude Frazier, an allergy expert from Asheville, N.C., pre pared a proposal to allow non physicians to carry and be trained to use insect sting kits. “Such trained non-physicians should be authorized to inject epinephrine as emergency, on-the- spot treatment of victims with or without a specific authorization of a physician,” said Frazer. Several experts said park rangers should be authorized to give such shots because the epinephrine is an adrenalin, and the only such drug effective in quickly reducing hyper-allergic reaction to insect stings. The estimated death toll of 50 to 100 persons is a very loose one and does not take into account the number of fatalities which could have followed stings, officials said.
