Tony Dow, who played the character of Wally Cleaver nearly 20 years ago, was just one of several patients waiting for Dr. Richard Yennie — a specialist in the Orien tal art of acupuncture — to treat their aches and pains. after 2:30, «ogram ■ 2aU I equipped, on., 1 balU; arpeted. 01* 1975 ( ^ couch I needed! Jble bedf He'll never know for sure if Yen- nie’s 4-inch needle on his head and hack and hand were solely responsible for relieving his ills, hut he’s willing to undergo more treatments. The 33-year-old actor appearing this month in an area production of “Barefoot in the Park ”, said in an interview he was not enthusiastic about trying the ancient art of using needles to cure pain. "I was really skeptical of all that stuff. But Dow says he badly needed re lief from throat and lung congestion and a cough that was hampering his performance. A doctor, medicines and assorted other traditional means of medicine during the previous three weeks had failed to arrest the problem, so on the advice of a friend, he decided to see Yennie. After two treatments under Yen- nie’s non-piercing needle, Dow said his ongestion has started to lift and his delivery on stage has improved. Dow’s skepticism of the virtually painless procedure has not entirely vanished — he says he’ll never know for sure if Yennie’s 4-inch needle on his head and back and hand were solely responsible for re lieving his ills — but he’s willing to undergo more treatments. Dow is not the only celebrity who says Yennie has improved his health. Houston Oilers quarterback Dan Pastorini — who led his team to vic tory in Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs — credited Yen nie with keeping him on the playing field. Pastorini, who was one of five Oilers receiving treatment from Yennie the night before the game, said Sunday T think it helped me get well a lot faster — an injury where I might be out three to four weeks. I was feeling a lot better in a week. I’m convinced it works.” The quarterback had suffered a deep chest contusion a week ago and hamstring difficulties, Yennie said, and it was doubtful whether he would start in Sunday’s game. “He’s been playing. And he was supposed to be out for six weeks,” Yennie says. Hypnosis? Positive thinking? Or “black magic,” as Oilers player An thony Davis said team members had called it? Hardly, says Yennie. Acupuncture, or “meridian therapy, he explains, is a ‘“natural” method of healing without drugs or surgery. The needle is simply used to stimulate a point of the skin that corresponds to another area of the body. The different points of the body are divided according to Chinese guidelines, he says. Two emergency kits to be marketed include supplies, reference manual He has convinced many doubting Thomases, including “People who say T know this BS cant help me.’ ” Yennie says he does not recom mend that acupuncture replace traditional forms of medicine. The two practices should work hand in hand, he says. He adds there are some ails he can and will not treat, such as cancer or a severed organ. For those, sur geons are the best solution. But he claims a 9 in 10 success rate among the some 15,000 pa tients he says he has treated in 20 years of practice. He says he has convinced many doubting Thomases, including “People who say T know this BS can’t help me.”’ That list of patients incudes some area physicians, he says. Some area doctors have come to him for treat ment and left satisfied, he says. Moreover, Yennie says with acupuncture, there are no side ef fects. The worst that can happen is “nothing at all.” United Press International NEW YORK — Two new medical self care kits are to be intro duced shortly, according to the manufacturer. Dr. Keith W. Sehnert, a pioneer in America’s self care medical movement, helped design the Auto Trauma Kit and the Burn Trauma Kit, both made by Marshall Electronics Inc., Skokie, Ill. The kit meant to help deal with injuries and other aspects of auto accidents includes: red flares, four ‘“help” flags to hang from the car windows or hold up so visible to oncoming traffic. Also: an emergency blanket to wrap under and around the victims to treat shock; muslin triangular bandages to use as slings or tour niquets, adhesive bandages, compresses, wound cleansing pads, adhesive tape, and wound scrubbers. On a stick-on sheet, about the size of the glove compartment door, there is listed an inventory of contents, instructions for use, and references to pages in the kit’s selfhelp manual. The burn trauma kit contains instructions, topical anesthetic, medicated ointment, bum ointment, bandage and tape. The initial instructions: —Flush burn with cool water. If small, wash with soap. —If burn is large, call for aid. —Tell doctor cause of burn Let aTI calculator help you make more efficient use of your time. This semester... and for years to come. FREE! A&M gets grant to study mitral heart valve function ■ No ff9 197: if, AM/f eat slia 12 orf As heart muscles contract to send blood coursing to the extremities of the human body, a valve in the main heart chamber performs a unique task, which is under study at Texas A&M University. It opens between heart beats, al lowing newly-oxygenated blood to flow into the chamber. Then the paper-thin leaves of tissue forming the valve close. Muscles in the walls of the left ventricle contract, pumping the life-sustaining fluid into the aorta, thence to the intricately branching vessels that deliver blood to the body. The valve must hold against the back pressure, to prevent blood from being forced backward into the left atrium, a sort of pump primer. In the human heart, however. things sometimes go wrong. The mitral valve weakens, and the leaves balloon into the left atrium. As the heart disease, called mitral valve prolapse, worsens some of the blood is forced back into he left at rium, instead of the aorta. Studies are under way by bioen gineers and computer scientists at Texas A&M to better understand the mitral valve functions. Under a U.S. Air Force grant, re searchers led by Dr. William M. Lively of the Industrial Engineering Department will build a computer program model of the mitral valve action. “The valve controls the flow of blood through an orifice between the size of a nickel and quarter in diameter,” Lively said. “It is sub jected to severe forces — amazing forces — over a person’s lifetime. “Through the computer program, model, we plan to determime some thing about the nature of prolapse, ” he explained. “The medical community doesn’t know what causes mitral valve pro lapse,” the associate professor of computing science noted. “A lot of people possibly have it, it seems.” The Air Force is interested be cause strains and stresses to which pilots are subjected are conducive to development of the disease. Lively said. Model construction and its uses will involve the efforts of Lively, in the Industrial Engineering De partment’s Computing Science Di vision, and Drs. Jerry Miller, Jon Humter and David Stoner, Bioen gineering Division.
