Carter was grinning broadly, dat was gesturing expansively and gin was watching Sadat pleas- tly. The meeting, planned as an over view of the problems to be solved, )k place on a sunflecked patio with three seated around a simple dwood plank table. It was the U.S. intention, ad- nistration officials said, for Carter enter the dialogue only when the nversation between the Egyptian d Israeli leaders ran into rough aces. One official said, “I can tell you lat the plan was. What I can’t tell you is what the president actually did. It was the first negotiating session between Sadat and Begin since last December when their second meet ing failed to produce any grounds for agreement on the crucial issue of the Palestinians. The news blackout that Carter had ordered for the summit was near per fect. In one of the few leaks, Israeli diplomatic sources said Israeli De fense Minister Ezer Weizman met for 25 minutes with Sadat late Wed nesday afternoon. American officials refused to confirm or deny the re port. There had been an earlier, chance meeting between Sadat, Begin and Weizman on a mountain trail Wed nesday morning. Sadat and Begin, on separate strolls through woods inside the heavily guarded compound, met on one of the trails. White House spokesman Jody Powell said they chatted for a while and Weizman, riding a bicycle, joined the conversa tion when he happened by. After the first formal summit meeting, Sadat made an unan nounced 45-minute trip by car through the Maryland countryside. American spokesmen said the trip was Sadat’s idea and happened be cause he admired the beauty of the green Maryland mountains. While Sadat was taking the drive, the Carters and the Begins strolled around the presidential retreat. The first official communication from the summit was an unsigned but jointly issued statement asking people of all faiths to pray with us that peace and justice may result from these deliberations.” After the first meeting of the three leaders, Carter met with Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and national sec urity adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski. i Tyso 1 Ftogen| 3< N.
