PAHUTE MESA, Nev. — The

It was the seventh announced nu
clear test explosion this year and the
317th underground blast at the site
since a treaty with Russia banned
atmospheric testing in 1963.
For the first time in two years,
reporters were allowed to observe
the test from the control point sev
eral miles from ground zero. They
reported dust bounced up when the
explosion thumped the earth up
wards.
A gentle east-west rocking motion
reached Las Vegas about 45 seconds
after the blast, causing hanging ob
jects such as plants and chandeliers
to sway. Occupants of high-rise
buildings had been told in advance
that they might feel the motion arid
workers were warned to avoid pre
carious positions at the time of the
explosion.
There was no radiation leak from
the explosion, according to readings
taken immediately after the detona
tion. Planes fly over ground zero at
detonation time to monitor for radi
ation.
The weapons test had a power be
tween 20 and 150 kilotons, the
maximum equivalent to 150,000
tons of TNT.
Phone service-
a ten day wait
By GARY WELCH
Battalion Staff
Local telephone company cus
tomers who need a serviceman to
connect their telephones may
find themselves waiting 10 more
days for service if they are not
home when he arrives.
The annual influx of Texas
A&M University students and
staff has put phone service con
nection as much as a week and a
half behind the application date.
“We are having more people
this year than ever before,” said
Bill Johnigan, division service of
fice manager for General Tele
phone (GTE). The sharp increase
in applications begins about Au
gust 1 every year, he said, and
during August this year there
were about 1,100 more orders for
phones than in 1977.
When a customer applies for a
phone, he is given a date on
which his phone will be con
nected. Near the beginning of
school, the usual wait is about
one week.
If the residence is equipped
with wall jacks, GTE simply
connects service sometime dur
ing the specified day, then rings
the phone to notify the customer
that it is working.
But il it is a new home or it has
not had recent phone service, a
GTE serviceman must complete
the wiring and install the jack.
At the time of application,
GTE asks anyone requiring a
serviceman whether they would
prefer him to arrive in the morn
ing or afternoon on connection
day. However, when each serv
iceman is given his work orders
every morning, he does not
know how long each order will
take, so he cannot know for sure
when he will arrive at a particu
lar residence.
A GTE spokeswoman said that
for this reason their servicemen
cannot be and are not required to
meet any time preference.
The best solution for custom
ers is to try to be home the entire
day the serviceman is to arrive. If
a customer is not home on the
specified day, his work order is
placed along with all custoa
who made their original app|
tions for phone service onf
day. In late August anden
September, this means a waii
more than a week.
“The heavy part starts ak
week before school," John
said. For about two week
the school year the flood ofa|
cations continues, he added
“We handle an average ofo*
300 applications a day forth 6
three weeks, he said,
take until about the end ofSn
tember to get all the workout
the field done.”
Johnigan said that since
many people apply for
service in August and S«
tember, many come away
ing that CH E is always this 4
At any other time of the ye
he said, the normal wait behm
application and connection
about 24 hours if the resideu
has phone jacks. If a services
is required, the wait is aba
three days.

Because there’s going to be nothing straight about a CHEECH & CHONG film.
Every generation has had their own comedy duo; the 30’s had Laurel and Hardy.
Abbott & Costello broke up the 40’s and Martin and Lewis really fractured the 50’s.
CHEECH & CHONG have helped make the 70’s go “UP IN SMOKE.”
CHEECH & CHONG are the comedy team that gave birth to rock comedy
and in the process of turning on a whole generation, sold ten million albums,
picked up numerous awards, including Cash Box and Billboard’s best comedy duo,
and a Grammy for their album, “Los Cochinos.”
Now it’s time for a CHEECH & CHONG movie.
C St C’s “UP IN SMOKE” will make you feel very funny.
So don’t go straight to see this movie!
