MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A
firefighters’ strike marked by more
than five million dollars of fiery de
struction in this city ended Tuesday
as union firemen returned to fire
stations.
Apparently satisfied for now with
the promise by city officials to re
sume contract talks in good faith,
about one-third of the firefighters
who joined the strike reported for
duty.
“Everything seems to lie smooth
and calm and to my knowledge
there are no pickets at any stations,"
Fire Director Robert Walker said
Tuesday morning. The remaining
firemen were to report Wednesday
and Thursday.
Union members met Monday
night and agreed by voice vote to
comply with an injunction issued
earlier in the day by Chancellor
Robert Hoffmann that ordered the
firemen to man the city’s 51 fire sta
tions at the morning shift change for
450 of the union’s 1,400 members.
"The men are going back reluc-
l’ nil
tantly,’’ said Kuhron
union president. “Theyare^ £ t)l |

this exciting new field. Legal assistants do much
work traditionally done only by lawyers.
Three months of intensive training in courses
taught by lawyers can give you the skills to inter
view witnesses, do legal research, prepare plead
ings, draft transaction documents, and prepare
cases for trial under the supervision of an attorney.
The Basic Legal Assistant Course begins Sep
tember 11. Call or write for further information:
