15-year-old kills
two police officer;
United Press International
HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Two
policemen were shot and killed
early Monday at a station house
by a 15-year-old boy who stole
the service revolver from one of
them in an apparent escape at
tempt, police said.
Officer James B. Swart, 25,
was pronounced dead on arrival
at Prince George’s General Hos
pital. Officer Albert M. Claggett
IV, 26, died shortly afterwards in
surgery.
Prince George’s County police
said the officers had arrested the
juvenile and an 18-year-old man
shortly before 2 a.m. on Mary
land Route 450 in the Washing
ton, D.C. suburb or Bladens-
burg.
The pair were stopped be
cause the car they were driving
resembled the car driven by a
suspect in the larceny of a coin
box in the laundry room of a
nearby apartment house.
The suspects were taken back
to the Hyattsville station for pro
cessing where they were held in
separate rooms.
Police say there were no wit
nesses to the shooting of office!
Claggett, but that the youth ap
parently stole Claggett’s ,38
caliber service revolver while
Claggett was talking on the tele
phone about 2:40 a.m. A police
spokesman said the youth appar
ently was not handcuffed be
cause he was being finger
printed.
Police said after the youth shot
Claggett, Swart ran in to assist
but was shot before he could re
act. The youth was disarmeil
moments later by Cpl. Paul Low
who tackled him as he ran down
a hallway. Low did not fire his
gun because of the presence ol
some civilian bystanders, police
said.
Police did not release the
name of the youth because heisi
juvenile. He has been chargedis
an adult hut his name hasnotyet
been released by the state’s at
torney’s office.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme
Court, expected to issue its long-
awaited ruling on the Bakke “re
verse discrimination” case this
week, is likely to follow the decision
with orders on several other affirma
tive action cases.
Allan Bakke, a 38-year-old white
engineer, is challenging the con
stitutionality or legality of a Univer
sity of California at Davis medical
school admissions program that sets
aside 16 out of 100 places in each
entering class for minorities.
Bakke contends he would have
qualified for admission if it were not
for the special program that allowed
applicants with weaker credentials
to gain entrance.
The justices have taken longer
than usual to act on several some
what similar cases, indicating they
may see some connection between
them and the forthcoming Bakke
ruling. The pending appeals in
volve:
— A challenge by three labor
unions to a model affirmative action
