Greathouse and Pieter Groot were promoted to new ad ministrative positions at Texas A&M University at the system’s Board of Regents meeting Friday. Greathouse was appointed as- xiate vice president for agriculture ad renewable resources, effective amediately and Groot was named isistant vice president for academic udgets, effective Sept. 1. Greathouse joined the Texas A&M faculty last year as associate dean of agriculture and professor of animal science. The former head of the Animal Sciences Department at Colorado State University is an internationally recognized livestock judge. Groot, a native of Haarlem, the Netherlands, studied business ad ministration and seven foreign lan guages. He served in the Royal Dutch army and the Royal Dutch air force, receiving advanced flight training in the United States. Groot joined the Texas A&M staff in 1956, after discharge from service to his native country, and was responsible- for research and ship administra tion. The university system budget in- reased 8.34 percent over last year ith all 10 units of the statewide sys- ;em posting gains for the fiscal year beginning Sept. 1. Texas A&M University and its re search and public service units re ceived a combined total of 5270,668,039. University President [arvis Miller said this marks the first year in which the agricultural and engineering extension services and their associated organizations will be administratively attached to the University in the allocation of budget funds. Texas A&M s operating budget increased 7.9 percent over last year ’or a total of $181,398,181. Funds for the system research and public service units were allocated as fol lows: • Texas Agricultural Experiim-nt Station 532,134,018 • Texas Agricultural Extension Service — $31,231,252 • Texas Engineering Experiment Station — $17.101,259 • Texas Engineering Extension Service — $7,473,049 • Rodent and Predatory Animal Control — $ 1,330,2S0 Other Texas A&M appropriations include a 3.9 percent salary increase for faculty and a 5 percent increase in salaries for employees earning $12,000 or less a year. Funds for organized research re ceived an expected 50 percent cut for 1978-79. The new budget also includes $25,000 for initial planning for con struction of a new dormitory to house 500 women (see related story, page 1), another $155,000 for preliminary design of the primary facility for the new College of Medicine and $37,800 for the sec ond phase master plan of im provements at Easterwood Airport. First National Bank of Dallas and Associates was the successful low bidder for an $11 million sale of the Texas A&M University System Permanent University Fund Bonds which will be used to finance con struction at Texas A&M. The bonds sold at an effective interest rate of 5.1388 percent.
