Ags favored in SWC meet
By SEAN PETTY
The meet that all track and field
men throughout the Southwest Con
ference work for all year is finally
here.
Starting Friday afternoon at 2:30
p.m., the Southwest Conference
Track and Field Championship will
begin in Austin.
The meet is the culmination of all
the efifort and sweat each performer
has put in throughout the year, and
there will be only one team that can
[call itself the Southwest Conference
IChampions.
I The favorite for that title is Texas
A&M.
I Texas A&M will be fielding one of
its strongest team in years, filled
■with youth and experience.
The Ags have strength in almost
[every event and lead the conference
[in several events.
J The 400-meter relay team of
(Chuck Butler, Ray Brooks, Leslie -
Kerr and Curtis Dickey have the
best time in that event with a time of
|39/75.
The 1,600-meter relay team of
Kent Figgs, Vernon Pittman, Arthur
Williams and Kerr have run a blister
ing 3:06.27 to lead the conference in
that event.
If both relays win, the Aggies will
have an instant 40 points.
Curtis Dickey leads the confer
ence and the nation in the 100-meter
dash and is expected to beat Texas
heralded Johnny “Lam Jones and
anyone else who hops in the blocks to
run that race. Dickey’s best time is
9.94.
Freshman Leslie Kerr goes into,
the conference meet undefeated in
the 400-meter dash and has the best
time in the conference having run a
46.3 in McAllen.
Freshman quarterback Mike
Mosley has the best time in the con
ference in the 110-meter hurdles
with a 13.52 clocking. Mosley ran
that time before spring football and
may not be able to duplicate his best
effort after laying out for a month
during football.
Tim Scott who threw the discus
188 feet 10 inches last week could
wipe out some of Houston’s power in
that event. Steve Stewart also has
the ability to let one fly and win.
The Aggies are very strong in the
400-meter dash with three
freshmen. Besides Kerr, Arthur
Williams is fifth in the conference
running a 47.09 and Vernon Pittman
has run a 47.64.
Coach Ted Nelson said the Aggies
are ready. “We have everyone
healthy and we are ready to go, he
said. “I think that if we can win both
relays and pick up a couple of firsts
like we should, we will win the
meet. ”
The race for the championship will
be a hot one with Houston right on
the Aggies heels with its strength in
the field events. Rice has a lot of
depth in the hurdles with the top
three times in the conference in the
400-meter hurdles and strength in
the long races.
Baylor could come in and be the
spoiler if the top three teams knock
each other out.
Texas has had a bad year with
many injuries but with a healthy
Johnny Jones, Texas could come on
ie
notes
Texas A&M’s women’s softball
team, seeded fifth at the outset, won
one and lost two to finish in a tie for
sixth place in the SWAIAW regional
tournament this past weekend in
Denton.
Kim Bellamy picked up the pitch
ing victory over Angelo State while
Sami Evans was the loser in the
other two games.
Coach Bob Ellis is preparing a
five-man Texas A&M golf team for
competition in the NCAA Cham
pionship tournament that is
scheduled for June 7-10 at Eugene,
Oregon.
A&M’s five-man squad includes
Dave Ogrin, sophomore from
Waukeegan, Illinois; Tim Carlton,
senior from Shreveport, La.’ Biff
Alexander, junior from Seguin;
Richard Cromwell, freshman from
Stuart, Fla. and Doug Ward, junior
from Little Rock, Ark.
Eight members of Texas A&M’s
women’s track and field squad will
compete in the TWU Track & Field
Fest this coming Saturday in Dent
on. llleana Hocking, 800 and 1500-
meter runs; Martha Sartain, 3,000-
meter run; Linda Cornelius, penta
thlon; Iris Tipton, shot put; Donna
Branch, javelin; Jan Chesbro, high
jump and Cindy Bartlett, 400-meter
hurdles.
in both relays and surprise some
people.
The big race of the meet will be
the 100-meter dash. Texas A&M’s
Dickey is the favorite. “Fm not wor
ried about Jones or anyone else, I
really feel confident,’ Dickey said.
People in Austin gave Dickey a hard
time when he did not run last week
and Dickey wants to quiet the Long
horn fans who think Jones is the
greatest.
So from the cold, wet days of
winter to the balmy days of May, the
Southwest Conference runners have
worked for this meet, and it looks
like Texas A&M may just be a double
winner in Austin this weekend.
