Ags end season with wild series

The SWC champion Texas Aggies
wrapped up regular-season play for
the 1978 baseball season last Friday
by sweeping a doubleheader from
the Lubbock Christian College
Chapparals in a pair of the wildest
games the Ags have been involved in
this season.
A&M pounded 18 hits and scored
in every inning to coast to a 21-1 win
in the opener but had to scratch for
their lives in the nightcap to claim an
11-10 victory.
The Aggie bats, having been
somewhat silent the past few weeks,
came alive Friday — especially that
of centerfielder Mike Hurdle. The
Victoria sophomore went 8-for-10
with 12 RBI's in the two games and
also had the game-winning hit in the
ninth inning of the second game.
While the A&M hitters took bat
ting practice at the expense of three
LCC pitchers, lefthanders Mark
Thurmond and Jim McWilliams
were putting the Chapparal batters
down without much difficulty. The
two Aggie hurlers combined for a
four-hitter, the only LCC run com
ing on a solo homerun by Tommy
Inman in the third.
Thurmond pitched five innings
and struck out nine in picking up his
12th win of the year without a loss.
He also ran his consecutive regular-
season winning streak to 23 games.
Offensively, the show belonged to
Hurdle. He went 5-for-5 in that first
game with a school record nine
RBI’s. Included in that barrage was
the first grand slam of his baseball
career which came in the fifth in
ning. The homer was Hurdle’s sixth
of the year.
The 21 runs were the most scored
by the Angies in a game this season.
The victory in the second game
did not come as easy as LCC scored
eight runs in the third inning off
Aggie starter David Pieczynski to
take an 8-2 lead at that point.
McWilliams came in again and did
a superb job of cooling down the
Chapparal bats as he retired the side
in order through his three innings on
the mound. McWilliams also struck
out five of the nine batters he faced.
Meanwhile, the Aggie offense,
which had been shut down since the
first inning when they scored two
runs on three straight singles,
perked up again.
A&M scored twice in the fifth on
three hits and an LCC error. A tow
ering three-run homer over the
400-foot sign in centerfield by
freshman Rodney Hodde brought
the Ags to within a run at 8-7.
The Chaps made it 9-7 with a run
in the seventh, but A&M tied the
game in the eighth on an RBI triple
by Hurdle and two LCC errors.
Lubbock Christian took the lead
again in the ninth on a solo homer by
Tim Leslie off A&M reliever John
Pockrus.
Robert Bonner led off the Aggie
ninth by flying out to deep center-
field. Robert Verde then ripped a
double off the leftfield wall that mis
sed being a homer by a foot.
Gary Bryant then appeared to
have won the game as he belted a
long drive to left. The LCC left-
fielder raced back and made a nice
over-the-head catch, however, for
the second out.
Randy Vinson then come on in re
lief for the Chaps and gave up suc
cessive walks to Kyle Hawthorne and
Steve Robinson to load the bases.
Hurdle then capped off a great day
by bouncing a hit past the LCC
shortstop to drive in the winning
bases in a season with 101.
The Aggies will now take a 36-12
season record into the SWC Tour
nament this coming weekend in Au
stin. A&M will battle the Houston
Cougars in Friday’s first-round ac
tion at 8 p.m.
Arkansas takes on Baylor at 2 p. m.
the same day in the other first-round
contest.
The double-elimination tourney
will conclude Sunday unless an extra
game is needed to determine the
champion. That contest will be
played Monday night.
The winner of the tournament will
be the host team at the South Central
Regional at Ranger Stadium in Ar
lington May 19.

Should the Aggies not win the
SWC Tournament, they will still
likely get an at-large bid to play in
the Midwest Regional. The date and
site for that tournament have not
been set, but should A&M be a par
ticipant, there is a good chance it will
be held at Olsen Field.

The doubleheader win completed
a four-game sweep by A&M over
LCC. The Chaps drop to 42-22-1 on
the year.
The Ags finished the regular sea
son with 13 straight wins at 01se:n
Field.
Other highlights of the Friday
doubleheader were Kyle Hawthorne
tying the school record for RBI’s in a
season with 48. The bigfirst baseman

NEW YORK — Chris Chambliss
slammed his first homer of the sea
son with one out in the 12th inning
Sunday to give the New York Yan
kees a 3-2 victory over the Texas
Rangers before a Helmet Day crowd
of53,829 — larges t in the majors this
year.
Texas reliever Len Barker, 1-2,
struck out Reggie Jackson to open
the 12th before Chambliss, used as a
designated hitter, smashed a 2-2
pitch over the right-center field
fence.
Rich Gossage, 2-2, the last of three
Yankee pitchers, fired four innings of
hitless relief and struck out five to
gain the victory.
The Rangers tied the game in the
sixth inning when they chased star
ter Jim Beattie. With one out, Beat-
tie hit Bump Wills with a pitch and
Al Oliver followed with an RBI dou
ble into the right-field comer. Richie
Zisk then singled up the middle to
score Oliver with the tying run.
New York grabbed a 2-0 lead oft
Dock Ellis in the second inning.
Wills booted Chambliss’ bouncer to
second and Craig Nettles belted El
lis’ next delivery over the right-field
wall for his third homer of the sea
son. Nettles also added a single and a
double.
