tled back down into their dugout,
the final game of the series began,
with David Pieczynski and Jim
McWilliams on the mound for the
1978 SWC champions.
The Aggies’ offensive attack was
highlighted by triples from Robert
Bonner and Verde.
With the score tied 5-5 in the bot
tom of the ninth, Arkansas’ Mike
Martin hit his second homerun of
the season over the left field fence to
give the Razorbacks a 6-5 victory.
The Texas A&M women’s track
team placed third with 88 points in
the Texas Association of Intercol
legiate Athletics for Women’s State
Track and Field Championships
held this Friday and Saturday at
Kyle Field. Texas Women’s Univer
sity ran away from the field, how
ever, with 167 points, while the
University of Texas placed second
with 109.
The highlight of the meet came
Saturday when a new American rec
ord was set in the high jump. Louise
Ritter of TWU easily cleared the bar
set at 6-3. The old American record
was set in 1975 by Joni Huntley of
Oregon State with a jump of 6-2 %.
The women of Texas A&M took
home four first place medals.
In the pentathlon, Sande Lam
bert of Texas A&M took the lead
from Jane Phillips of Baylor in the
fourth event, the long jump, with a
leap of 18-5. That left her with a 23
point lead going into the 800-meter
run. Phillips never threatened
Lambert in the 800 however, giving
Lambert the gold medal with 3,649
points. Included in the pentathlon
were the 100-meter hurdles, the
shot put, the high jump, the long
jump, and the 800-meter run.
Texas A&M’s Linda Cornelius
won the long jump with a leap of
19-7 V2, out-distancing her closest
competitor. Hazel Williams of
TWU, by a full five inches. Also,
Cornelius ran a fast 14.10 in the
100-meter hurdles to take fourth
place. The winning time in the
100-meter hurdles was a 13.37 run
by Lena Gibbs of TWU.
It was a close race in the 800-
meter run with Texas A&M’s Ileana
Hocking breaking the tape just eight
hundredths of a second in front of
lent defensive work on the part of
teammates, Ross was able to in-
ase his season record to 8-3.
Dn the strength of a four-run rally
the fifth inning, the Aggies took
atitp : advantage in the important se-
swith a 6-1 victory.
Saturday’s opening game prom-
d to be a showdown between two
the conference’s best pitchers,
n hollar of Arkansas and Mark
urmond of Texas A&M. Unfortu-
tely, hollar, who was suffering
m a shoulder injury, had to leave
game early.
Thurmond ran into trouble in the
st inning when the Razorbacks
ided the bases with one out. Once
un, however, teammates proved
be valuable commodities to a
:cher.
Aggie third baseman Robert
rde scooped up a bouncing
ounder and threw the ball to
tcher Buster Turner, waiting at
s plate for the force. Turner, in
rn, threw the ball to first baseman
le Hawthorne to complete a dou-
b play that may have been the key
the series, according to Texas
cM coach Tom Chandler.
jA&M’s scoring drive was high-
hted by a two-run homerun by
iwthorne, his 14th of the season,

time of 2:14.77. Also, Hocking took
third place in the 1500-meter run
with a time of 4:38.03.
The javelin-throwing contest was
decided by a mere three inches
when Texas A&M’s Donna Branch
out threw TWU’s Gena Breedlove
with a throw of 148-2.
Other good performances came
from Martha Sartain, Texas A&M’s
top long-distance runner. Sartain’s
three-lap kick in the 5000-meter run
against the University of Texas’ Julia
Campbell made the race a favorite
with the fans Friday evening. Sar
tain took second in that race behind
Campbell with a time of 17:40.81.
Saturday, Sartain took third place in
the 3,000 meter run behind
Campbell and Nancy Scardina of the
University of Texas with a time of
10:20.40.
Honors for the outstanding indi
vidual competitor went to
Campbell. She won the 1500-meter
run, the 3000-meter run, the
5000-meter run, and anchored the
University of Texas’ winning two-
mile relay team.

HARRY LEDBETTER
A&M ’67
Harry Ledbetter’s Money
Management Program
As a fiscal conservative, I have developed a
comprehensive program to effectively manage the
$2 Billion dollars on deposit in the State Treasury.
Here are aspects of it:
Rate of Return: The State Treasurer should not
play politics with our tax money. I pledge to put
the taxpayer’s money to work earning the highest
interest available.
Cash Flow Forecasting: Using modem man
agement techniques, we can accurately determine
how much money the state needs in liquid funds.
The state’s obligations must be paid on a timely
basis at minimum administrative cost.
People all over Texas are responding enthusiastically to my cam
paign. I appreciate your support. I know that the public trust must
be earned, and it is a responsibility I accept. I ask for your vote on
May 6th. If you share my concerns, encourage your friends and
neighbors to vote for Harry Ledbetter for State Treasurer in the
w V m Democratic primary
election May 6th.
