Texas will still see Earl Campbell
By Mark Patterson
Battalion Staff
After six years of reading about
Earl Campbell, from his days at
Tyler John Tyler High School
through his stint at the University of
Texas, the people of Texas can look
forward to continued reading about
the Tyler Rose.
Much to the displeasure of the
Pittsburgh Steelers, the Cincinnati
Bengals and Cleveland Browns,
Campbell will become a Houston
Oiler next Tuesday.
But the most disappointed team
has to be the Los Angeles Rams.
The Rams had been trying for the
past two weeks to swing a deal with
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the
rights to this year’s first round draft
pick. And until Monday it looked
like the deal would be finalized.
The Rams were prepared to offer
tight end Pat Nelson, two offensive
linemen and their first- and
second-round draft choices this year
for the rights to Campbell.
But Tampa Bay head coach John
McKay examined game films this
weekend and rated Houston’s
second-year tight end Jimmy Giles
ahead of Nelson. So the bargaining
turned to the Oilers.
The Oilers threw in their first-

and second-round draft choices this
year and their third- and fifth-round
draft choices next year, along with
Giles, for the rights to Campbell
and the deal was finalized.
“We needed a big, strong tight
end to fit into our offense and now
we’ve got him,” said Tampa Bay’s
McKay. “Giles isn’t a polished
player, but we think he’ll be the
kind of tight end that will be worth a
No. 1 draft pick. ’’
“We didn’t want to give up Giles
because he’s both a good football
player and a good kid,” said Oiler
head coach Bum Phillips. “But this
is the trade that this club needed.
We’ve always needed a strong
power back and now we re going to
get him.
“This trade is our committment to
excellence.”
But the Oilers won’t get the serv
ices of the Heisman Trophy winner
cheap. Mike Trope, Campbell’s
agent, is already talking in terms of a
contract well over $1 million.
The man who everybody is talk
ing about isn’t doing much talking
on the subject of money. Campbell
isn’t letting the dollar figures affect
him.
“We ain’t gonna talk about
money,” said Campbell when asked
about his possible future salary.
“That’s not my job. I pay for some
body to look our for that.
“I’d play for $50. Not many
people get to play close to their
home for their entire career. I feel
real fortunate to do so.”
But even though excitement and
money is swirling around Earl
Campbell’s head, the man hasn’t
lost sight of his main goal in life.
