Move out before the bugs move
n. If a dorm room becomes infested
with bugs, dorm residents can move
ill their belongings out and exter
minators spray with insecticide.
E.C. Oates, safety and mainte-
lance supervisor, said that roaches,
ints and crickets are the major prob-
em.
“Insecticide is applied three
limes a year routinely,” Oates said.
Exterminators spray before the fall
semester, around Christmas, during
spring break, and sometimes after
the spring semester.
Oates attributes the problem to
bod scraps and bad sanitary condi
tions.
“All the fighting you do will not
3e effective if you don’t get rid of
he food,” he said.
Oates said that he hopes students
:ake care of their rooms and will in-
brm the resident adviser if they see
\ need for an exterminator.
L.R. Johnson, associate director
of custodial services, attributed
problems to various causes.
“The major reasons for hug prob
lems are food, grease, and drink
machines,” he said. "Also, the cli
mate contributes to the cockroach
problem.
“Bugs are less of a problem as
years go on,” Johnson said. “Our
program of scheduled inspection
and treatment has been a contribut
ing factor.
“We spray the areas where the
complaints originate and any adjoin
ing areas that are infested,” Johnson
said.
Custodians are responsible for
dorm room interiors and building
perimeters. The grounds mainte
nance department cares for the area
outside the building perimeter.
Options for handling the insect
problem are spraying insecticide or
using roach hives, a cardboard trap
with bait.
“We use the USDA approved in
secticide for the particular applica
tion,” Johnson said.
