Page 8 Heart disease may he inherited A unique colony of dogs with congenital heart defects is being established here to aid medical studies at both Texas A&M Uni versity and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. The project just reached a major milestone with the birth of the first puppies bred from par ents in the colony. One of the four young pups is thought to have a heart defect. After under going tests in Houston to confirm the condition, the puppy may eventually be able to create other offspring with the same problem. Such research, said Dr. David Gross of Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, will bene fit both dogs and children. Puppies may serve as stand-ins during experimental surgery techniques and basic physiology research since these types of studies cannot be conducted on babies with identical problems. Information gathered from the studies will also benefit veteri narians and animal researchers because little is known about the effects of certain heart defect treatments on dogs which actu ally have heart defects. In the past, much of this re search was conducted on normal dogs and the results are quite dif ferent. Dogs with heart defects sel dom live past two years and na ture has built in other self- restraints among those animals with defects. They are poor re producers and are more suscep tible to maladies such as pneumonia. So it has been a struggle to es tablish a breeding colony. The current population of five was almost doubled with the arrival of the four puppies. Now, with banks of frozen se men, the scientists will not have to keep males with certain de fects in the colony indefinitely waiting for the right female. Should the male die, or be needed in other studies, its semen can be frozen for use later. D.W.I. classes: ‘I don’t belong here Cidl> Hypnosis helps police solve crimes in Israel 4103 S. TEXAS AVE. When the driver handed him his change he noticed a cold sweat on the young man’s palm. Therefore, during hypnosis, he pointed out the youth as being a likely suspect. “Although the driver only faced the youth for the short period of time needed to sell him a ticket, he was able to reconstruct an Identikit portrait. At a later date a suspect, whose description perfectly fitted the Identikit portrait, was arrested and confessed to the crime,” the ar ticle said. The Israelis marked their article “preliminary communication” — meaning it is subject to still more experimentation. They also cautioned that the technique should only be used on witnesses or victims who wish to cooperate fully and never on suspects except at their specific request and in the presence of an attorney. From the 40 cases thus far studied, the authors of the article said, it appears that hypnosis may be a potential tool to elicit essential information providing it is used by experts and the questioning relates to meaningful material. The two techniques used to achieve “hyperamnesia” — memory recall greater than that achieved in a non-hypnotic state — are “age re gression” and “revivification.” By JAN BAILEY “Excuse me. . . do you know; where the ... (in a low whisper).... D.W.I. class is being held? “What. . .(in a too loud voice). . .Oh, you mean the drunk class. Sure, it’s on the second floor of the courtroom.” My cheeks burn as I slip up the stairs. What if someone sees me here? All my friends will know. They will never believe my story. I don’t belong here. I sit in a pew-like bench near the front of the room. Everyone is star ing at me, I can feel it. Yet when I turn they’re all looking straight ahead. There are 33 of us in the room, but we re each very much alone. A few seem to have friends here and they make idle chatter, but even they seem alone — their voices drift off and they stare at the blank screen at the front of the room. No one wants to be here. This is no PTA meeting. This is a class for people who have been convicted of drinking while intoxicated, or as it’s more commonly known, D.W.I. Usually on the first conviction the judge sentences you to probation and assesses a fine. Both the length of probation and the amount fined vary. The maximum penalty for this first offense, a misdemeanor, is six months in jail or $1,000 fine, or both. Most here received considerably less than that. Many had to spend the night in jail while they sobered up and their bond was posted. And as part of their probation they have to attend this class. Since this is a misdemeanor and a first offense, this D.W.I. does not go on your driving record. When you get off probation there will be no record that the crime was ever com mitted. But two more D.W.I. con victions in the next five years will add up to a felony. Jim Harris strolls into this room in the Brazos County Courthouse. He’s a community alcoholism counselor for the Brazos Valley Mental Health- Mental Retardation Center and he directs this class. He is fol lowed by a probation officer who records everyone’s name. If you’re on probation and you miss a class you have to make it up. You also have to tell your probation officer why you are not going to be there. The class begins at 7 p.m. sharp; if you arrive after 7:15 you’re counted absent and you must make up the class. A few mumble about the rules. I mumble along with the rest. I am a reporter. I am not on proba tion. I have not been convictet driving while intoxicated. Over the next four weeks flit) to remind myself of these factsM their They’n acnrm quence become more concerned over own drinking habits. Over the four weeks there will be manyfe drinks, I want to jump and scream, “ not like the rest of you. I should;: here.” I soon find that everyone els the room feels the same way. After Jim introduces himself explains the purpose of the class, is bombarded with questions. “Why do we have to come toll things? I know a man whos D.W.I.s and he’s never haj come,” complains an old na khaki. “Why did I have to stayinjaf night, when I know a fella’who out in a couple of hours?’ 1 ! another. The “I know a man. . .’’quest buzz like flies. No one wants ts here. But if they do have tobein why doesn’t everyone else who committed the same crime? Jim doesn’t have any pat anw Besides, most of these people want answers.
