Page 14 THE BATTALION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 1978 sports Bellard divides squad for spring game By MARK PATTERSON Battalion Sports Staff Gong into spring football drills head coach Emory Bellard said that every position on the team was up for grabs and intensity would decide the starters on his club. The results of this spring’s four weeks of work will be showcased Saturday night as the annual Maroon-White game kicks off at 7 p.m. in Kyle Field. For the first time, Bellard has di vided his team as evenly as possible for the spring inter-squad game. “I tried to make the two teams as even as possible in order to get the most competitiveness,” said Bellard after Tuesday’s workout. “And the way things are shaping up, it looks like it’s going to be one heck of a game. A look at the starting backfields for the two squads empahsizes Bol lard’s objective. Bellard took the eight best ball handlers on the team and divided them evenly according to their talent. Directing the Whites will be sophomore-to-be quarterback Mike Mosley. Mosley has had a busy spring, splitting his time between football drills and running on the Aggie track team. Running behind Mosley will be the backfield of George Woodard at fullback, with Holly Wilson and David Brothers at the halfback pos itions. On the other side of the field, David Beal will be the starting quar terback for the Maroon squad. Back ing Beal will be Raymond Belcher at the fullback position and Adger Armstrong and Curtis Dickey at the halfback slots. Melvin Robertson, defensive coordinator, and Tom Wilson, of fensive coordinator, will be in the press box directing both teams. “I’m just going to be watching them play ball,” said Bellard. “I won’t be doing anything special, but I might throw something in every once in a while. “All the coaches will be working in conjunction with each other dur ing the game. They won’t be work ing in competition with each other.” But the players on the field will be. And they are the people that Bellard will be watching. “Some players are still competing fiercely for positions on this team,” said Bellard. “And there isn’t a single position on this team that’s locked up. “True, there are some people who have demonstrated the ability and will be hard to dislodge, but even those players don’t have room to sit back. “This game is important to every body.” ft V . ■ ——|L~- —HfVd; Quarterback Mike Mosley and halfback Saturday during the annual Maroon a David Brothers are seen here running the op- White game.
