TOKYO STCJIK HOUSC Construction of the six-floor addi tion to the Texas A&M University library is ahead of schedule toward 1978 fall semester occupation. The new structure abuts against the east wall of the existing building and will bring total floor space in Sterling C. Evans Library to 500,000 square feet. The $9.7 million project includes renovation of the present building after the new segment is occupied. The completed work will provide space for two million volumes. The new additon is 48 percent complete, according to Lloyd Barge, construction inspector of Texas A&M’s facilities department The library addition started Sept. 18, 1977, and is three and a half months ahead of schedule. Barge noted. Completion of the addition is expected Nov. 13, but it could be in early December, contractor Walter Biggie said. Director of Libraries Dr. Irene Hoadley has initiated planning for a .iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiimiiiiiiiiiiiiiL. mid-November move, though it would be inconvenient for library users. A between-semester move would be acceptable to the library staff’. Bids are out now for additional shelving. Only the first four floors and part of the fifth are planned to be initially furnished. The remain der is planned for later expansion. Floors of the new and old build ings will work as single units via cor ridors through the east face of the existing structure. Librarians like the flexibility of the layout, said Charles Smith of the library faculty. The first two floors will have offices, meeting rooms and some interior walls, he said. The third floor will have open floor space with built-in electrical, telephone and computer connections. “Students should find the lounge space a surprise feature,’’ Smith added. Study carrels are included on the third and fourth floors. Some basement parking is planned. Biggie said the Nov. 13 comple tion date hinges on getting six to eight more bricklayers who are in high demand. “We’ve done remark able well on the job, though I’m not as pleased on the weather and mate rials as I could be,’ he remarked. “Actually, we re a little behind on our schedule, though ahead on the University’s. ” The construction work will be aided by the long-range weather outlook, which includes less than normal rainfall. There’s rough road ahead for the Texas motorist, a transportation specialist believes — especially for the Houston and Dallas urban areas. A combination of more vehicles spilling out of big cities, a traffic mix of different size vehicles and increasing truck transport of all goods appears certain, said Dr. C. V. Wootan. Traffic death rate t s and serious injuries are predicted to rise. The Texas Transportation Insti tute director at Texas A&M Univer sity said it is resulting from Texas’ strong economic growth, influx of new population and increasing in dustrial activity. Hanis County last year added a net of 411 cars a day to its freeways and highways. “This annual addition, if parked bumper to bumper, would stretch from downtown Houston to Plano,’ Wootan said. At the same time, Houston did not add a single mile to its freeway network. on both ends, with smaller} irigli cars facing larger trucks highways.
