Farm to be foster home
By CHRIS PlCCIONE
Still Creek Christian Farm will
become the new home for seven fos
ter children when the housing
facilities are completed next year.
The Still Creek Farm is a 117-acre
tract located on the northwest edge
of Byran, directly off Sandy Point
Road.
The purpose of the farm is to help
meet the needs of young people and
allow for development of personal
responsibility, good work habits,
and fellowship.
The Answer, a non-profit organi
zation located on University Drive,
has owned and operated Still Creek
Farm since 1976.
During the summer, the farm
employs young people in a Summer
Work Program.
In addition to these 20 youths,
seven foster children from the wel
fare department will be living at
Still Creek permanently.
Seven to 12 children, adopted
and living together, comprise a “fos
ter group home.” If more than 12
children are adopted at once to live
together they are considered to be
living in an institution and must
meet the specified licensing
standards.
Supervising the children will be a
husband and wife team of the An
swer counseling service, said Bobby
Hubley, Answer program coor
dinator.
Wayne Brunt, 15, another sum
mer worker said, “It’s really good to
have responsibility like this. I feel
like it’s getting me ready for other
jobs later on.”
The cost for restoring and furnish
ing Still Creek Farm will be approx
imately $100,000. It will cost an
additional $3,000 a month to feed
and house the seven foster children
and pay live-in supervisors.
[football game shuttl
considered for 1979
The foster children will work in
the 7-acre produce garden with the
Summer Work Program youths.
“We want to create a family situa
tion, combining personal counseling
and family care,” Hubley said.
John Huff, who participated in
the Summer Work Program last
summer, said he carried water for
irrigating cedar trees, cleaned up
old boards for use in building,
picked and cleaned vegetables, and
dug fence post holes.
“Three thousand is a lot of
money, but it’s hard to put a price
on helping a person,” Hubley said.
The state pays $2,000 annually to
the parents who adopt foster chil
dren. This amount does not include
the cost of clothing or medical ex
penses.
The farm will be financed by do
nations. It is also seeking aid from
federal grants, such as the Moody
Foundation, Hubley said. So far,
less than $1,000 has been collected.
By LAURA HENDERSON
A shuttle bus to home football
games for off-campus students
may be in operation by the fall
semester of 1979, said Mary
Hutchison, chairman of the foot
ball busing committee for the Off
Campus Student Association.
OCSA conducted a survey the
week before spring break to
measure student reactions to
shuttle bus service to football
games or midnight yell practice.
Now OCSA will continue re
search and present plans for a
service to University officials
later this year.
About 800 students partici
pated in the survey, said Hutchi
son. “There were few responses
from on campus students, ski
said.
The original shuttle bus,
was to provide transportation f»
off-campus students to ho®
football games and midnight yel
practices, said Mike Mitchel,
OCSA president.
Hutchison said the sum)
showed 700 students were in
terested in the shuttle to footbal
games. About 400 were
terested in it for transportation)!
midnight yell practices, she said
The program still needs ffloti
research, said Mitchell.
OCSA is in the process d
doing reserach on successful
shuttle bus systems at other uni
versities in Texas.
