7 am not a politician, nor a cam-

hniques of 'selling my parents' in

— Tom Menefee, son of the Aggie
irents of the Year.

Battalion StafT
Tom Menefee didn’t try to sell his
rents as Aggie Parents of the
ear, but he did. Ralph and Inez
lenefee were named Aggie Parents
the Year Sunday morning at the
ents’ Day Program in Rudder
ditorium.
The Menefees were selected from
jven recommendations by a ten-
member student committee.
The Menefees currently have
|in sons enrolled at Texas A&M,
oth members of the Corps of
ladets and the Class of ’78. Tim is
le executive officer of Third Battal
ion staff, a member of the Ross Vol-
lunteers Firing Squad and an indus
trial distribution major. Tom is
commanding officer of Squadron
Five and a recreation and parks
major.
The Menefees, from Alvin, own a
small restaurant in the small town
20 miles south of Houston.
The family have a dog named
“Rock,” after Rock the Good Ag,
and they also have personalized
Aggie license plates. One says “4
Ags,” which represents the two
sons, one daughter who also at
tended Texas A&M and their son-
in-law, and the other license plate
says “ROTC ’78.”
“They have never missed an
A&M football game in Kyle Field,”
Tom wrote in a letter nominating his
parents. “And even this past De
cember one of my parents had
surgery postponed until after the
Texas A&M vs. U. of H. game just
so they could watch my brother and
I in our last football review.
“They didn’t want to miss it for
anything,” Tom said.
The Aggie Parents’ of the Year are
chosen on the basis of written rec
ommendations from students cur
rently enrolled at Texas A&M and
for their involvement in community
and University activities,” said
Laurie Began, member of Parents’
Day Committee.

“My parents have always been a
big part of everything we were in
volved in — like Boy Scouts, Texas
A&M Mothers’ Club, and Little
League baseball,” Tom said. “In the
summer their world slows down just
like ours does because there is not
really anything going on.”
“My dad never went to college.
He wants to see us do well because
when he sees us excel at something
I think in a way he sees himself ex
celling because he sees so much of
what we do as a part of him,” Tom
said.
Ralph Menefee is easily recog
nized during his regular visits to
Texas A&M because he always
wears a collection of name tags on
his collar to show his support. One
name tag reads, “Ralph Menefee,
12th Man, 13th Man, and 14th
Man.” Two other name tags, one
from each of his twins say “An Ag
gie’s Father.”
Ralph Menefee proudly donned
an additional name tag Sunday. It
says he and his wife are Aggie Par
ents of the Year for 1978.
