S. 693-1164 EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the third of a three-part series. A desert plant capable of produc ing a replacement for whale oil is years away from high commercial production, says a Texas A&M Uni versity plant scientist. The plant, known as jojoba (ho- ho-ba), produces an oil almost iden tical to the oil of the endangered sperm whale. Current efforts to increase prod uction of jojoba in the wild con tinue, but until more is known about the plant, few of America’s farmers can risk the gamble of grow ing an unknown crop. “From what I know, if you can produce it, you can sell it,” says Dr. Charles Miller of Texas A&M. “The problem is that it takes three years to get the plants up. If you’re lucky, it will be five years before there is any sizable production acreage. The U.S. Congress currently has a $60 million bill under considera- p tion for research and development of oil producing plants similar to jojoba. “Our first step at Texas AW| find the exact conditions the, i i grows best under, whatdij In | led it and the rainfall req Ulr jL k ,ai lor maximum production Miller. “We will set out asinj It vvas plot this spring from cuttiX have grown in the greenhouse^ w hi a sizable gamble, but right road in this lean The Battalion Classified wereosberiou ...... rnin g prmKctitio I here is not enough inforjM The known about the plant.
