Tennis team loses to TCU
By KEVIN PYLE
A&M’s tennis team is like a group
of mountain climbers who are
caught just below the summit. They
have had a good climb but they just
can’t seem to get over the last ledge.
Wednesday against TCU was no
exception as the Ags fell to the
Horned Frogs by a score of 8-1. The
loss was a close one however as
*
three of A&M’s players split sets in
singles and one of the doubles teams
won.
The lone victory for the Aggies
came in the No. 2 doubles as the
team of Mike Moss and Trey Schutz
beat TCU’s Rick Meyers and David
Zimmerman by scores of 7-6, 6-4.
In singles competition, freshman
Reid Freeman in the No. 1 position.
was beaten by TCU’s All-American
Randy Crawford 6-3, 6-3.
Freeman started out like he was
going to come off with an upset over
the TCU star as he won the opening
three games of the first set easily.
Crawford, a senior, got his swing
grooved however and went on to
win 10 games in a row. Freeman
won three in a row in the second set

before being closed out 6-3.
For Freeman it was his second
loss in conference play which gives
him a 5-2 record. Crawford, last
year’s SWC singles champion,
upped his record to 6-0.
TCU, ranked tenth in the nation
in the latest poll, also won the other
five singles matches. Rick Meyers
beat freshman Max King 6-1, 6-3,
and Tut Bartzen Jr., the coach’s son,
downed junior Mike Moss by scores
of 7-5, 6-2.
In the next three singles matches,
A&M did manage to split sets with
the Frogs. Freshman Trey Schutz
was beaten by David Zimmerman
6-3, 4-6, 6-3, junior Robin Baker
was defeated by David Kelley 6-3,
5- 7, 6-4, and freshman Jim Grubert
was downed by Jim Allen 1-6, 6-4,
6- 4.
In doubles, Crawford and Bartzen
beat Freeman and King 6-3, 6-0 and
Kelly and Allen beat Baker and
Grubert 6-4, 6-0.
Coach Richard Barker’s Aggies
are now 26-28 in conference play
while Tut Bartzen’s team is 34-7 and
have a perfect 6-0 match record in
conference play.
Coach Bartzen, obviously pleased
with his team’s performance, said
that after they upset No. 4 SMU last
week they would probably move up
a couple of notches in the rankings.
The Aggies next match will be
against the Mustangs in Dallas and
it will be their last conference match
before the SWC meet which will be
played April 22-24 at the HEB
Tennis Center in Corpus Christi.
