Frogs come to town
WHO IS
HOUSE OF BC
m By DERRICK GRUBBS
Wi'
ith a chance of moving into first
ace in the SWC standings, the
, teas Aggies host the TCU Horned
nt rogs this weekend in a three-game
^■'les at Olsen Field.
A&M, at 9-3, is currently in sec-
:n( l idplace, a game-and-a-half behind
P (1 i)ntrunning Arkansas, which is
_ p. Should the Ags sweep TCU
®%1 the Hogs lose just one game to
seas Tech this weekend in Fayet-
De, A&M would move into the
le position with three weekends
BVC play left on the schedule.
Be Aggies come into the TCU
C Bs riding their longest winning
Hk of the season wih six consecu-
Bvictories. They swept their last
■conference sets with Rice and
ylor to bring their season record
22-10.
h Wednesday the Aggies defeated
8 Houston Astros 1-0 in an exhibi-
S Bgam e at Olsen Field, but that
jltest does not figure into the offi-
Ml'lffecords.
.. ghe Horned Frogs are 10-18 on
11 Bear after losing both ends of a
,|bleheader to Oklahoma Wed-
VOlBay, 10-2 and 6-3, in Norman.
ID is currently tied with Texas for
place in the SWC with a 4-8
e mark.
e Frogs finished an even 22-22
R ] Season.
liWe think we’ve got a better club
last year,” says TCU coach
ie Maxwell. “Our pitching staff
iged up considerably with arm,
Ider and back injuries to five
’erent pitchers. Our staff was
young and untested to start
and the injuries have just com-
t ded the problem.”
xwell says he has five healthy
ers who will have to carry the
5 through the A&M series. The
experienced is senior Ruben
in, who is 3-5 on the year with
53 ERA. The rest of the group
hides junior Dale Arnold (2-3,
>3), sophomore Cameron Young
3, 5.40) and freshman Greg
Meyer (1-5, 9.96). Senior Terry Gil
bert (0-1, 6.06) may see action
against the Aggies in relief.
One of the reasons for those hefty
ERA’s is that TCU plays in a park
much like that of Baylor’s with short
outfield fences where the ball car
ries well for hitters.
To compensate somewhat for the
lack of strong pitching, TCU boasts
a sound hitting club that is batting
.269 as a team.
They also have a veteran club,
with six seniors in their starting
lineup.
At first base is one of the league’s
top sluggers in senior Biff LeFevre,
who is hitting .333 on the year and
leads the Frogs in home runs (nine),
RBI’s (24) and runs scored (27).
The rest of the TCU lineup has
junior Doug Hudspeth (.250) at sec
ond base, senior Chuck LaMar
(.294) at third base, ffesheman Trey
Brooks ( .238) at shortstop, senior
Danny Rosellini (.253) at catcher,
senior John Shelley (.281) in right-
field, senior Terry Bellows (.329) in
centerfield, senior Steve Houk
(.413) in leftfield and sophomore
David Novey (.221) the designated
hitter.
Houk is leading the team in hit
ting while Rosellini leads in doubles
with seven.
“TCU is a vastly underrated
team,” says Aggie coach Tom Chan
dler. “They’ve got as good a hitting
club as there is in the league.
LaMar, Bellows, LeFevre and
Rosellini especially are all proven
ballplayers. They also have Brooks
at shortstop who was highly re
cruited out of high school last year.”
Chandler plans to use the same
lineup that collected 28 hits in last
Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of
Baylor. That’ll be Robert Bonner
(.339) at shortstop, Robert Verde
(.266) at third base, Gary Bryant
(.294) in rightfield, Kyle Hawthorne
(.324) at first base, either Mark
Warriner (.317), David Pieczynski
(.300) or Rodney Hodde (.235) the
designated hitter, Mike Hurdle
(.317) in centerfield, Tim Feickert
(.263) in leftfield, Buster Turner
(.266) at catcher and Randy Wood
ruff (.273) at second base.
Bonner is leading the Aggies in
hitting and has nine doubles.
Hawthorne leads in home runs (12),
RBI’s (30), and total bases (72).
A&M will be out to break the
school record for home runs in a
season as they brought their team
total to 42 last weekend against
Baylor which ties the record set last
year.
The Aggies’ pitching rotation for
the TCU series will remain unal
tered with Mark Ross (4-3, 3.63)
pitching the 3 p.m. Friday game
and Mark Thurmond (7-0, 2.13) and
David Pieczynski (3-3, 3.33) work
ing the 1 p.m. doubleheader Satur
day.
In last year’s A&M-TCU series in
Fort Worth, the Ags swept all thxee
games by scores of 5-1, 7-3, and
17-4.
In that third game, A&M rapped
out 23 hits, with Bonner tying the
SWC record for hits in a single game
as he went 5-for-6.
The rest of the schedule around
the SWC this weekend has Texas
Tech at Arkansas, Baylor at Texas,
and SMU at Houston. Rice is idle in
league play but will be down in
Edinburg for a three-game series
with South Dakota and Pan Ameri-

| Like Ours—
gg Today people experiment with their lives—sometimes they find
something valuable; sometimes they just waste time.
Some people have trouble finding what they want because they
have a very special set of needs... .They want to give their lives for
the greatest cause they can think of. They are involved with God,
with other people, with life. Money, prestige, or power mean little to
them. They know they want to live for God by spreading the Gospel
of Jesus Christ.
But they are searching for fresh and vibrant ways to proclaim this
Gospel. They are looking for a variety of opportunities in different
parts of the country to serve with a group of men who share a holy
vision and live that vision in a free and friendly way.
They are looking for THE PAULISTS, a group of Catholic priests
spread through the United States and Canada, working in a wide
range of ministeries that include parishes, campus centers, mass
communications, publication, preaching, adult education centers,
social services, and new approaches to inviting people to know
Jesus Christ.
If you are searching to share what we do, why not write THE
PAULISTS for more information.
