The Meals on Wheels program delivers
54 meals in Brazos County to shut-ins. A
person must be at least 65 and be recipient
of SSI, according to a Community Action
Agency report.
“Usually friends recommend a person
who would benefit from the program,” said
Johnson.
Energy Assistance, another Community
Action program, is planned for Brazos
Coutny to weatherize homes free.
“The overall goal,” said Curt Swenson,
supervisor of the program, “is to tighten up
homes to make them more energy efficient
so that less energy is wasted. Fuel bills have
the potential of being lower — 30 percent to
40 percent can be saved.”
Weatherization includes replacing broken
windows, weather stripping, insulating and
patching roofs.
The Community Affairs Department es
timate (as determined from their housing
studies of 1970 and updated census mate
rial) indicates Brazos County has 1,100 sub
standard housing units that qualify.
“Still any other number of houses are far
from energy efficient, Swenson added.
Many applicants have been refused in
other counties. In Burleson County, there
was money for only 18 persons out of 100
who applied. Material costs can’t exceed
$250, said Swenson.
“The problem so far has been labor. We
need volunteers.
Swenson said an advantage of the pro
gram is that it provides both immediate and
long-term benefits.
Medicare and Medicaid are federal pro
grams, paying only for medications in hospi
tals and nursing homes, said Rees. They
