    A&M fifth in forestry meet

Texas A&M University forestry
students placed fifth at the 21st An
nual conclave of Southeast Forestry
Schools last Friday and Saturday in
Clemson, S.C.
Thirteen southern forestry schools
competed in forest technical events
and forest practices. Twenty-one
students represented Texas A&M.
Jess Jarrett, junior, won first place
in the ax throw. Tommy Bell, junior,
placed third in the knife throw.
Seniors Gary Beacher and Donnie
Simpson placed third in wood chop-
ing and wildlife, respectively.

Texas A&M in the Conclave were:
Chris Eichman and Todd Cheves,
men’s cross-cut; Joyce Moore, de
ndrology; Fred Haas, pole felling;
Friends plan tour
The Friends of the Texas A&M
University Library plan their spring
meeting April 29 at Liendo Planta
tion near Prairie View.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Detering, re
storers of the historically significant
plantation, will open it for the meet
ing.

will include time to tour the house
and gounds. A charter air con
ditioned bus will be available to

Texas A&M gets
$16,000 in grants
Aluminum Company of America
(ALCOA) recendy presented $5,000
to Texas A&M University’s Aero
space Engineering Department.
The grant was presented by Lyle
W. Hovland, ALCOA laboratories
senior engineer and W. D. Essary,
Rockdale plant engineering man
ager.
“This is a first year award and can
be renewed for up to two years,”
Hovland told Vice President for
Engineering Fred Benson and other
department officials. It is one of 40
nationwide grants.

The money is a memorium to the
late Dr. W.C. Banks, head of veteri
nary radiology and professor of vet
erinary medicine and surgery. Banks
originated “Radiographic Aids,” a
publication distributed by
