mumsmmmSSSm THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 24, 1978 Page 7 road to Moscow is a long one BY DAVID BOGGAN The Southwest Conference was well represented in the 1976 Sum mer Olympics when Johnny “Lam’ Jones from the University of Texas returned to Austin with a gold medal as a member of the United States relay team. Now there is talk of SVVC repre sentation in Moscow in 1980. And the person that has been mentioned as a possible Olympian is a Texas A&M track star named Linda Cor- neilus. If everything goes as expected in the next two years, Corneilus, a junior from Ft. Worth, hopes to represent the United States in the pentathlon in the 1980 Olympics. “I think it would be really neat to represent the United States in the Olympics,” Corneilus said with a smile. “If I go, I’m sure going to take my camera. It would be great to go to Moscow. “Of course, it would be a long haul to get there. I would have to do well in the Collegiate Nationals. Then, I would have to place well in the AAU outdoor meet in the year of the Olympics. They take the top eight or the top six from that meet to the Olympic trials. The top three Americans from the trials, if they can meet Olympic standards, go to Moscow. Obviously, qualifying for the games is no easy process. But Cor neilus has already won the AAU meet last year in Xenia, Ohio. “If I didn t qualify for the Olym pics, I don’t think it would ruin my life, like it might for some people,” Corneilus speculated. “For exam ple, people like Bruce Jenner. He trained 10 hours a day for the 1976 Olympics. That was like his job. I don’t think I can do that. “I can’t totally dedicate my life or my time to training. I think I train hard enough right now. At least I train as much as I think my legs can stand.” “What I could really train harder on is weights,” the pentathlete said. The pentathlon consists of five events: the high jump, the long jump, the 100-meter hurdles, the 800-meter run and the shot put. “Linda’s weakest event is the shot put,” said her coach, David Williams. “You could tell that just from her body frame.’ Corneilus does not have the bulky arms and shoulders that one associates with a shot putter. “I am definitely weak in the shot put,” Corneilus admitted. “That’s where working more with the weights would help me. “I could win the other four events and get beat in the shot put and I would still lose the pentathlon be cause I did so poorly in the shot put. But I’ve got the time to work on it. I think I can do it, I just have to prac tice. ” Corneilus said she started run ning track in elementary school and continued to compete at Paschal High School in Ft. Worth. “I took it step by step,” she said. “My dad coached me on the side. I started getting serious about track when I thought about getting a scholarship. ” And she did get a scholarship, to the University of Nevada at Las Vegas. But she was only there for a year. “I hated it out there. There’s too much desert out there,” Corneilus said with a laugh. “My performance went downhill from high school out in Nevada. I was even considering quitting track.” “Then I came to A&M where we have a close knit team, I’m close to home and my fiancee goes here. I have broken personal records at every meet here. Maybe it’s the Texas air. Whatever it is, it works. Cor neilus will compete with the A&M women’s track team in the Texas A&M Relays at Kyle Field tomor row, a meet that will feature 20 uni versity and numerous high school teams. And hopefully, we will see Linda Corneilus in 1980, up close and per sonal — the Moscow Olympics way. ■ ■ ■ I I ■ OFF “EASTER SPECIAL” I I Buy any giant, large or medium pizza and get off the original price.
