Anchors away
for A&M
training ship
Texas A&M University’s training
ship, Texas Clipper, is bound for
deep water again. Officials have an
nounced the 1978 itinerary for the
14th annual Summer School at Sea
Program.
The Clipper will be home to more
than 200 students, faculty and crew
ofTexas A&M’s Moody College dur
ing the nine-week Central and
South America cruise. Ports of call
include Peru, Panama, Mexico and
Martinique.
The 473-foot vessel sails from
Galveston June 10 and returns to its
home port Aug. 6, said Moody Col
lege President William H. Clayton.
Included in the cruise will be a
select group of 1978 high school
graduates enrolling in the Texas
Maritime Academy, a part of the
Moody College. Known on board as
prep cadets, the young men and
women will be assisting in ship
board maintenance and operation,
work in food services and take part
in cadet activities.
The 58-day cruise is also part of
the required training for cadets pur
suing U.S. Coast Guard licensing in
the Merchant Marine.
Prep cadets also earn up to six col
lege credit hours during the trip.
Students may choose English, his
tory or math as their course of
study.
Clipper scheduled stops include
Dry Torugas; Norfolk, Va.; Fort de
France, Martinique, and Balboa,
Panama Canal Zone. Callao, Peru,
is the furthest point south the sea
school will dock.
Return ports are Cristobal,
Panama Canal Zone; Vera Cruz,
Mexico; Tampa, Fla.; Beaumont,
and finally Galveston.
Vet says therapy
for aging pets
causes problems
Old pets are usually special to
their owners but veterinarians
should avoid radical therapy to
merely prolong the life of an aging
dog or cat, Dr. Neil Van S tavern of
Texas A&M University told veteri
nary students from around the na
tion Friday.
Severe treatment and unneces
sary hospitalization may do more
harm to both the owner and geriat
ric pet than results warrant. Van
Stavern warned representatives of
the country’s 23 veterinary colleges.
“In this type patient, the cure is
often times impossible. Our aim
should be to control problems and
do everything we can to make the
animal more comfortable. Avoid
stressing the animal with unfamiliar
surroundings and severe therapy,
because stress can cause decompen
sation,” he said.
Prolonged and unusual treatment
of old pets can also work a financial
hardship on owners, although they
are usually prepared to help their
pets remain in as good as health as
economically feasible.
Geriatric care of animals will be
the most challenging to the skills of
the young veterinarian, said Van
Stavern, because biologic change
means loss of functional reserve in
organs, loss of normal regenerative
ability and loss of adaptability.
A final word of advice was to be
considerate of the owner of the
geriatric pets, since the animal may
serve as a link between them and
someone who has died or left home.

United Fund
helped by Corps
The Wings and Saber Society of
the Texas A&M University Cadet
Corps presented $1,400 to the
Brazos County United Fund Friday.
The check was presented to Stan
ley Sommers, president-elect of the
area United Fund, by Terry Stanis
lav, a senior geophysics major and
president of Wings and Saber.
The money was raised from tick
ets sales to the Elephant Bowl, an
annual corps football game. It fea
tures seniors from the Army, Navy
and Marine Corps units of the Corps
of Cadets playing against the seniors
from the Air Force and the Texas
Aggie Band. Air Force lost this
year’s game 27-20.
Last year the Wings and Saber
Society donated more than $1,500
to the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation
Center.
