Th ose “blue” northers that whis
tle across Texas in the winter may
help provide summer cooling. Such
a possibility is under study at Texas
A&M University.
The key is groundwater aquifers,
underground water-bearing strata of
sand, gravel or porous rock.
During winter, water would be
pumped out, cooled in a special unit
and injected hack into the aquifer
for storage until warm weather ar
rives. Then the cooled water would
be extracted for air conditioning.
Such a system, moving 200 gal
lons of water per minute, would
serve a housing development of
about 20 homes, at about $1,000 a
year based on initial investment.
Single residence use would not he
cost effective.
“Like most alternate energy
sources, there are technical ques
tions to be answered first though,”
Dr. Donald L. Reddell said. The
Texas A&M agricultural engineer
ing professor and Drs. R. R. Davison
and William B. Harris in chemical
engineering are seeking answers in
research funded by the U.S. De
partment of Energy.
Their experiment will involve a
series of wells and a cooling pond,
the latter now under construction,
