THE BATTALION FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1978 Page ippti: torim uggers want to go west ie By BRENDA BROOKS Santa Barbara or Bust! The Texas A&M women’s rugby team is trying k> raise approximately $4,000 to ravel to the 13th Annual Santa Bar- lara Rugby Tournament in Califor- a. The women’s mgby team is con- idered an extramural team. Aecord- g to the Texiis A&M University ntramural Office, an extramural earn is a club that raises money for its club and travels to other cam- uses (local and out of state) to com pete. The women’s rugby team tried to raise money by selling mums during he 1977 football season and by col- loolsti Sehoo •Ids s »ein 8 , mamii t e Cnu rodutt atorv a J i M be tilt ip iiBtii mdav L-anipis luddei lecting $5 dues from each team member. The team also sells T-shirts and bumper stickers at each of its games. The team tried to make money during the fall semester by selling cords of wood. The women cut the wood themselves with one chainsaw and several axes. The team lost money on the wood-cutting project because they had to reimburse the women for the broken axes and they only sold six cords. According to Monica Romagnoli, chairman of the money-making project, “The team was definitely not going to get to California by chopping wood.” The team’s latest project is col lecting money door to door. Romagnoli said the women hate to go from door to door asking for con tributions, but the team really wants to go to California. Romagnoli said that the people in town don’t really understand rugby, but because the team represents Texas A&M University, many townspeople contribute. Romagnoli said, “The apartment complexes are great. The students are really trying to help us.” Some of the students explain that they just don’t have any extra money, but wish the team lots of luck. Each of the 20 team members must collect $268. This is the cost per person for an airplane ticket roundtrip. The California team has offered their private homes for the women to stay in if they can just pay their own way to California. Each member has been forewarned that they must pay $50 if they don’t col lect their quota. Romagnoli said, “We really want to go to this tournament.” The team has collected $760 in two weeks. Romagnoli said that they were behind and really needed to start working hard to collect the money. She said that the women are hesitant to go door to door. Texas A&M University provides the women’s rugby team with an $800-$ 1,000 account per year. This money is kept in a school account and money is not withdraw unless approved by the school. The money is used to pay entry fees to the tour naments or to reimburse the women for their gas money when traveling to a tournament. The women’s rugby team cur rently ranks first in the state with a 24-1 winning record. The team’s only loss was to Ohio State at Mardi Gras. The team has scheduled a grudge match with Ohio on March 18-19 in Webb city. Mo.
