Wednesday evening the Texas A&M Hospitality Committee did just that. They sponsored a fashion seminar and hosted Batik Creations and The Varsity Shop. Sunny Ilcken, for Batik Crea tions, explained the trend towards the. flowing, comfortable batik fash ions. The fashions transcended from the national costumes of Indonesia and Malaysia. Ilcken said the best thing aobut these fashions is they can be dressed up with a silk blouse, or dressed down with a sweater. The skirts can also be worn year around. The fashions, however, cannot be worn just anywhere. A basketball game would certainly not be appro priate. A dance, on the other hand would be perfect. Some of the fashions could be worn as many as eight different ways. Ilcken pointed out this can be fun, especially for people with an imagination. Also modeled were batik shirts and caftans. These were made from the same splashy material as the skirts and dresses. Susan Mathis, owner of the Var sity Shop, discussed hairstyles such as the wedge and the bevel, which resembles a Cleopatra-style haircut. Vernene Parker, chairman of the Hospitality Committee, said the committee will be sponsoring another fashion show Wednesday at the Memorial Student Center foun tain. The show will run in two shifts from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. Batik fashions will be presented again, but different dresses will be modeled. Two years ago the program was started with the help of federal grant. Last year the board s request for a second grant was denied. Now parents want the board to reinstate the program in August 1978 and provide funding in the 1978-79 budget. Wednesday s meeting included discussion of the program model. Parents disagree on whether it should be a resource room with a special teacher, a regular classroom or an instructional method with stress on individual project assign ments. They also discussed which of the following areas should be included: general academics, aptitude in one specific area, creativity, leadership, arts-talent and psychomotor which includes manual dexterity, athletics and dancing. Criteria for entrance into the pro gram was also discussed. These in clude IQ scores, achievement scores, general information knowl edge, teacher referral and perform ance tests. ii N Petal Patch tip' r, "Your Complete Florist" Battalion photo by Susan M Jennifer Brock, a junior accounting major, models a fashion at the Hospitality Committee’s fashion seminar. the: BUD WARD VOLKSWAGEN INC. 693-3311 FLOWER ARRANGEMENTS POT PLANTS ± WEDDINGS _.u>su.vl- CORSAGES Conveniently located across from campus"' 707 Texas Phase II 846-6713^ BtLOMSEe SPRING SALE FEBRUARY 27 - MARCH 4 20% off on all unpainted plaster, candles, and candle rings.
