A love research survey of 568 couples concluded recently that couples who live together rather than marry get along better and build stronger, more permanent re lationships. “Marriage is often for the in-laws, the IRS, the mortgage bankers — everybody but the couple,” said Jonathan Young, a marriage coun selor who headed the survey project. “Cohabitants are more often hap pier than married couples.” The survey found that young people tend to be less selfish and more willing to contribute to their lover s happiness. "The younger respondents re ported a greater willingness to do favors for their partners, make sac rifices and even suffer for the well being of their lover,” Young said. “The findings also showed that married people and those living to gether were more altruistic and more willing to admit their feeling of attachment,” he said, much more so "than people who were in dating re lationships.
