Although two-tenths and four-
tenths of a degree Fahrenheit per
decade may not seem like much,
meteorologists point out that if the
average temperature of large parts
of Earth fell by two or three de
grees, it probably would be enough
to build up ice sheets — the way the
last ice age began.
Why the cooling occurred, and
whether it will continue, are ques
tions that cannot be answered on
basis of today’s knowledge.
“It’s all very peculiar because the

Angell is one of nine scientists
from the United States, West Ger
many and Japan who discussed the
climatic trend information in a re
port in the British scientific journal,
Nature.
He said the data show that there
apparently has been more cooling at
higher elevations in the atmosphere
than at the surface, and that there
has been an increasing difference in
the rates of cooling in the tropics of
the Northern Hemisphere.
“You’re getting an increase both
in the change of temperature hori
zontally and a change in tempera
ture vertically,” he said.
“This would lead to greater

Aid form to College Scholarship Service to allow sufficient time for proper processing
and mail time.
Applicants for financial aid from Texas A&M University have to compete for limited
funds. Deadlines are established so that all applicants are treated fairly and equally,
