TV makes ‘soft heads’
By Sallyanfte Cornelius
“Americans spend too much time
watching television. Even I would
get a soft head with all that televi
sion,” Constantin Kuzminsky said
Wednesday night. Kuzminsky is an
exiled Russian poet and art critic.
The Memorial Student Center
Arts Committee sponosored “For
bidden Arts from Leningrad,”
Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Rudder
Theater.
Kuzminksy said more modern
American literature is poor quality.
“Whitman and Hemingway are
examples of American writers to be
proud of,” he said.
“All poetry is unpublishable in
Russia,” he said. Most of Kuzmin
sky s poems are based on the con
cept of freedom, he said.
Snowstorm and hahies arrive together
United Press International
NEW YORK — Monday’s near
blizzard brought more than snow to
the nation’s largest city. It brought
babies too.
Puzzled doctors at one New York
City hospital said twice as many
babies were born during Monday’s
storm than on a normal day.
“The place has really been buz
zing since midnight,” said a spokes
woman for Long Island Jewish-
Hillside Medical Center.
“We’ve delivered 16 babies since
midnight and four mothers are in
labor right now,” she said shortly
after 9 p.m. On a normal day, 10
babies are born at the hospital, she
said.

Kuzminsky was dressed in leather
pants with patches, a fur hunting
jacket, sandfes and a felt hat.
“I am a poet. I am a dissident. A
poet has to be a dissident or he has
no chance to be an artist,” he said.
Kuzminsky and his translator,
Grady Hillman, presented poetry in
Russian and English, Russian
music, and a slide show. Kuzmin-
sky’s poetry dealt with problems
poets and artists face in Russia.
Kuzminsky left the U.S.S.R. in
1976. He said, “I was a poet, and 1
pretended to be a Jew. That’s
double crime in Russia.”
Kuzminsky is a visiting professor
of Slavic and English languages at
the University of Texas at Austin.
