It was Animal Science 408 taking control of 26 heifers for a class project. The 38-member class is taught by Dr. Lowell Schake of the animal science department. The purpose of the class is to test HEI-GRO, a de vice released last year as a non-drug growth stimulant. “We will decide at the end of the semester if the device is something good or just another interesting idea,’ Schake said. planted the growth stimulant in 13 of the 26 heifers. The HEI-GRO is produced by Agrophysics, Inc. and distributed by the Holmes Serum Company. The HEI-GRO is designed for pas ture or feedlot heifers over 450 pounds that are destined for slaugh ter. The device is made of food- grade nylon and shaped like a Christmas tree. It has a ring-like base and two rows of fingers, each terminating in a small ball.
