A quiz to pass boredom
Do you sit staring blankly at the
television set, a cold sweat covering
your body? Are you periodically
overcome by dizziness? Do you feel
like you have no purpose?
Well pro football fans, I have a
solution for your between seasons
blues. A football quiz that will carry
you and your friends into next year’s
season.
Ye Old Bridge Grill in Westport,
Conn., gives their customers a free
drink if they can identify all 28 NFL
teams by puns on their names.
Sports Illustrated ran a sample of
the quiz in their Dec. 19-26, 1977,
issue but their list was incomplete.
But I obtained a complete list for all
28 teams with each clue identifies
one of the teams.
So fans have at it and enjoy. And
if by chance you get all 28 right,
cheers!
The first two are done for you.

Dick Nolan named
New Orleans coach
United Press International
NEW ORLEANS, — Dick No
lan, former coach of the San Fran
cisco 49ers today was named head
coach of the New Orleans Saints,
replacing Hank Stram, who was
fired after winning seven games in
two seasons.
Sources confirmed the hiring of
Nolan less than an hour before a
scheduled noon CST news confer
ence.
Nolan had been considered the
leading candidate for the job, al
though the Saints talked briefly with
Don Coryell, coach of the St. Louis
Cardinals.
Nolan, a linebacker coach with
the Saints last year, began coaching
in 1962 for Tom Landry and the Dal
las Cowboys. He coached the 49ers
for eight years, compiling a 54-53-5
record and leading San Francisco to
three consecutive NFC Western
Division championships.
Nolan became the fifth head
coach in the Saints’ 11-year history.
Terms of his contract were not im
mediately available.
Stram, who came to New Orleans
as the eighth winningest coach in
NFL history, struggled through a
4-10 season in 1976. Then, despite a
mercifully easy schedule, led the
Saints to a 3-11 record in 1977.
Saints’ owner John Mecom had
recruited Stram and given the
former Kansas City Chiefs coach a
free hand in running the New Or
leans franchise for two years. But
the honeymoon ended last De
cember when the Saints became the
first NFL team to lose to the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers.
“This is a poorly coached team,’
Mecom said after the Tampa Bay
game.
Mecom, however, refused to dis
cuss the possibility Stram might be
fired and it appeared the coach and
owner had made amends in early
January. The announcement of
Stram’s dismissal Jan. 28 came as a
surprise to most.
“Mr. Mecom just hasn’t been
happy with the progress in Hank’s
two years,” said Harry Hulmes, a
Saints’ vice president. “We just
didn’t feel we were progressing to
the point of being a contender."
