NFL coaches play musical chairs

Almost before the ink could dry in
the record books after the last games
of the 1977 regular season, the
biggest head coach swapping frenzy
in recent NFL history began to
shape up.
To the best of my recollection, so
far it has gone something like this:
Jack Pardee left his job in Chicago to
take over at Washington when
George Allen left the Redskins to
return to Los Angeles when Chuck
Knox left the Rams to lead the Buf
falo Bills. Don Coryell and Hank
Stram have, for one reason or
another, become dissociated from
their teams, St. Louis and New Or
leans, respectively. Dick Nolan and
Dan Reeves have been named as
possible new head coaches next sea
son. If I’ve left anyone out, please
forgive me. To paraphrase the old
line, you can’t tell the coaches with
out a program.
With all the confusion in the front
offices of the various NFL teams
over who’s coaching what club
when, I think this is the perfect time
for me to get my big break in life as a
head coach in professional football.
A new face in the crowd. Yes, I am
willing to negotiate with any franch
ise that is ready to talk terms.
Ladies lose to Coogs 68-61

Missed shots, fouls and an injury,
plagued the Aggie Ladies Saturday
as they were defeated by the Uni
versity of Houston 68-61.
“Von Bunn has injured a bone in
her foot,” Aggie coach Wanda Ben
der said in Hofheinz Pavilion be
fore the game. “She hasn’t worked
out all week. The only way I will
play her today is if she hurts me too
much by sitting on the bench.”
As it turned out, Bunn did play;
however, Karen Muskiet started in
place of Bunn. Noticeably slowed
down by her injured foot, Bunn was
not as effective as she usually is; al
though, she did score 12 points, as
did Margaret Byrne and Pat Werner
to lead the Aggies’ scoring drive.
“Von was a lot slower because she
has missed practice all week,’’ Ben
der said after the game. “But I de
cided to play her because the trainer
said she could play without further
injury. And the team has more con
fidence when they know Von is play
ing or is going to play.”
The Aggies’ main problem was an
inability to score once they had
worked the ball inside.
“We got the shots; we just
couldn’t hit them” the Aggie coach
said. “We had worked on a screen
and roll play all week. We used that
play tonight and it worked every
time but we just couldn’t make the
shot once we were inside.”
The Aggies got into the one-and-
one situation with only five minutes
gone in the first half, another factor
that decreased their chances of
victory. Houston capitalized on the
Aggies’ fouls by hitting 61.5 percent
from the charity stripe. Sharion
Higgins was the Cougars’ leading
scorer with 19 points.
“Houston is a very physical
team,” Bender said. “They beat us
everywhere on the floor. We
changed our defense to cover them
better outside, but they are just
tougher and stronger than us.”
Ironically, Cougar coach Dot
Woodfin said the same thing about
the Aggies.
“A&M is a very physical team,”
Woodfin said. “Stephen F. Austin is
not as physical as the Aggies.”
The Aggie Ladies play at home
Tuesday night against Lamar Uni
versity. Lamar defeated the Aggies
earlier in the season 66-59. Tip-off is
at 7 p.m.
Golfers place third
My credentials? Well, I started
watching professional football on
television when I was in the fifth
grade, so I am a veteran armchair
quarterback of ten years.
It was also in the fifth grade that I
acquired valuable knowledge in
building a successful football team. I
made some shrewd bubble gum
card deals in those early days. 1 once
traded a Ron McDole and a Jack
Kemp for a Bob Lilly. Had I known
that Kemp would later become a
member of the U S. House of Rep
resentatives, I would have held out
for a Bart Starr as well.
Football experience? No, I never
played football in school. The
coaches said there was no place on
the field for someone as skinny and
clumsy as me. I was so uncoordi
nated I couldn’t even look at a pack
of Juicy Fruit without stumbling.
They did offer me one position on
the team but I had to decline. I was
allergic to laundry soap.
I have, however, logged several
hours of game time on the sandlots
of Central Texas. And I’ve been in
volved in a couple of games of
Louisiana street football, where the
rules vary according to what block
you’re playing on.
Previous coaching experience?
Yes, I once helped my father coach
the minor league baseball Panthers.
I think we were 3-7 that year. We
were in a tough league: insurance
companies revoked the policies of
our umpires. Anyway, coaching ex
perience is coaching experience,
matter what the sport.

A1 Pryor Intercollegiate golf tour
nament in the Bayou City this
weekend over the Longhorns of
Texas and the Aggies of Texas A&M.

The tournament was played on
the woody Par 72, Atascotita Coun
try Club course.
Houston finished with a team
total of 733. Texas was next with a
763 total followed by A&M with a
775.
The Aggies had the second lowest
team score on Sunday with a 383.
Houston finishing first with a 372
while Texas came in third at 385.
The individual title was claimed
by Cougar Blaine McCallister with
rounds of 72-70 for a 142 total.
Freshman Richard Cromwell led
the Aggies with scores of 76-74-150.
He was followed by senior Tim
Carlton, who posted rounds of 78-73
for a 151.
Freshman Jay Kent was next with
a 156 total based on rounds of 79 and
76. Sophomore Dave Ogrin and
junior Biff Alexander were next with
159 totals followed by sophomore
Jerry Martin with a 163. Only the
low five total scores counted in the
team scoring.
“I think most of our trouble came
from a lack of concentration” coach
Bob Ellis said. “That could come
from the Aggies looking forward to
their next tourney. This one was
primarily a warm up for the Pan
American Intercollegiate in
Monterrey, Mex., on Feb. 9-11.
