The Texas A&M Bookstore is
not the only place to buy books in
Ithe Memorial Student Center. Lo-
| cate cl in room 137, just past the
main desk, is the MSC Bookmart.
■ Because of advertising problems,
such as printing mistakes in the
fivers, the Bookmart has remained
relatively obscure. But Tommy
Parks, senior Economics major and
general manager of the Bookmart,
I said the Bookmart will begin adver
tising this semester.
I ; The Bookmart works on a con-
jgnment basis. Students bring in
their books and put prices on them,
and the Bookmart raises the cost by
25 cents.
'We urge them to sell at 60 to 65
ercent, said Parks. “This makes
ore money for the students and is
* still cheaper than the bookstore.”
Parks added that the reason
ookmart books are sold cheaper is
hat the Bookstore buys books at 50
jercent and sells them at 75 per-
ent.
Students selling books check in
from time to time to see if their
books have been sold. When the
Bookmart closes on Feb. 17, unsold
books may be picked up by their
owners or stored by the Bookmart.
“Well take anything they bring
us,” said Parks. Even outdated
books are accepted because they can
be sold to outside businessmen for
their home libraries, he said.
Four students operate the Book-
mart and are receiving three hours
credit for their work. One of the
student’s class requirements is giv
ing two presentations on how the
Bookmart works. Parks said when
the Bookmart opens again around
Dead Week, he will use volunteers
from student senate and some
fraternities and sororities.
Parks estimates that more than
430 books have been sold this
semester and that total Bookmart
profits amount to somewhere be
tween $20 and $30. But since
Bookmart is non-profit, money goes
back into the Bookmart for advertis
ing and other expenses.
