^[Completion, June 1981 THE BATTALION Page 11 WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1978 Vet Addition at $9 million I MEEET CHA AT MAMA’S mZA By TERESA ROACH Construction of the new $9 million ofinical Sciences Building, a de- , elopment of the College of Veteri- jjl i ary Medicine will begin January 979. The anticipated completion { ate is June 1981, said Dr. E. W. .It l ' llett ’ ■ 1 I The building will be located [ithin the Veterinary Medical Com- J ilex along FM Road 60. ( ( e ® "This new building is going to be a e iatch-up building,” said Ellett, [reject coordinator for the new Clin- cal Sciences Building. “It is needed o catch up on all the things we’ve issed over a long period of time. ” “The most critical need in the Col- ege of Veterinary Medicine is the linical sciences facility, an addition o the teaching hospital, he said. The building will contain 78,000 iq. feet of clinical space and approx- mately 250 rooms. The small animal linic is in need of this space, said Ellett. The present teaching hospital was rected in 1955 to accommodate 64 students per class. Currently 138 students are admitted into each entering class. More space is needed to make room for this increased class size. The Veterinary Medical Ad ministration Building was completed in 1968, a substantial addition was made for the large animal clinic, but a limited amount of space was provided for the small animal clinic. After the building expansion was completed, a bio-medical program with 897 students was added. “All of these additions have placed strain upon the cramped clinical facilities,” Ellett said. The small animal clinic is now handling 15,000 clinical additions per year in space designed for 4,000 cases, he said. The space for the small animal clinic will include: a laboratory, hos pital wards, surgical suites, and treatment rooms. The lecture rooms will not be re stricted for clinical use, Ellett said. They will be used by all departments and are based on the office of plan ning & institutional analysis for the needs of the entire veterinary col lege. Space for clinical diagnostic- laboratories will include: clinical pathology, clinical microbiology, clinical parasitology, epidemiology, clinical pharmacology and toxicol ogy, and radiology and clinical nu clear medicine. These areas will serve the entire college in both clini cal needs and research programs. “We have no immediate plans for increasing enrollment or changing our program after the completion of the building, said Dr. W. W. Bay, associate dean of the College of Vet erinary Medicine. “We particularly need space in the small animal clinic and Clinical Sci ences Building,” he said. “We admit more students per class than any col lege of veterinary medicine in the United States. “With the new addition and facilities, we will bepome more com petitive with the other colleges, Bav said. j Firemen learn to battle all kinds of fires in class Five Bryan and College Station emen are taking eight weeks of isic fire fighting training at Texas University.
