Candidate disapproves
Consol voting process
A Texas attorney general candi
date expressed his disapproval of a
voting procedure used by the A&M
Consolidated School Board in elect
ing Elliott Bray as vice president of
the board.
The candidate. Price Daniel Jr.,
addressed students at the Memorial
Student Center cafeteria Friday af
ternoon.
Local media had questioned the
legality of the Bryan vote taken last
week under terms of the Open
Meetings Act. The Board members
cast their ballots in secret. The
Open Meetings Act does not state
whether a secret vote is permitted
or if all votes should be made by
voice.
Daniel questioned the legality of
a secret vote.
“But a secret vote is certainly in
violation of the spirit of the Open
Meetings Act,’ Daniel said.
Daniel was Texas House speaker
and advocated the Open Meetings
Act when it was brought into legisla
tion in 1973.

Soldier’s Medal
given for heroism
Major Marc B. Powe, class of
‘61, was awarded the Soldier’s
Medal recently. Powe distin
guished himself by heroism in
volving personal danger and vol
untary risk of life at the United
States Embassy building in
Moscow, USSR.
During a multimillion dollar
fire that enveloped the upper
floors of the Embassy, Major
Powe directed efforts of ensuring
the security and protection of ex
tremely sensitive classified areas.
With fire above and below, Major
Powe for over three hours suc
cessfully prohibited access of
foreign personnel into the
classified areas. This prevented
compromise of the area and pos
sible detriment to the United
States Government. The
exemplary courage, dedication,
and heroism displayed by Major
Powe, reflects great credit upon
him and the United States Army,
the award citation said.
