Page 8 THE BATTALION FRIDAY, JANUARY 20, 1978 Ags venture to Red Raider countr By PAUL ARNETT Battalion Sports Editor If Fred Sanford were coach of the Texas Aggie basketball team he would tell them that this is the big one Elizabeth. The Aggies need to defeat Texas Tech this weekend in Lubbock. “We’re still looking for that big win,” coach Shelby Metcalf said. “Our guys will have the opportunity against Texas Tech. It would be a great boost for our morale if we can beat the Red Raiders at home. Texas Tech, with a 4-1 record in the SWC, is tied with Arkansas for second place. But coach Gerald Myers’ crew has not been that im pressive so far this season. “Tech has a good ball club, Met calf said. “They’re not as strong as last year’s ball club, but they’re well coached. Russell is back and he has always been a problem for us. If we can stop him then I think we stand a pretty good chance of beating them. ” Freshman Rynn Wright will start against Russell. Wright has been impressive in A&M s last two games on the offensive boards. “Rynn keeps showing us some thing in every game,’’ Metcalf said. “He just keeps getting better and better. I’m really proud of Rynn and Vernon. They have played well for us this year.’’ Another man who has played well for the Ags is guard Dave Goff. The 5-11 sophomore directs the team of fensively. When he is absent from the line-up, the offensive machine bogs down. “Dave coordinates our offensive scheme,” Metcalf said. “Sometimes his size hurts us on defense, but he’s just too valuable a man on offense. Everyone is starting to coordinate their actions around him and it def initely helps our offensive attack.” Karl Godine adds the finishing touches to that attack. The junior from Houston Kashmere has shot well from the outside in the Ags’ last three games. If he continues to im prove on defense, Godine will be come an invaluable commodity. “Karl and Jarvis keep getting bet ter every game,” Metcalf said. “It has taken them awhile to get back on track, but I think they’re getting there alright.” All of those men will have to per form well if A&M entertains any thoughts of defeating the Red Raid ers. Tech centers their game around Russell and so far he has responded to the challenge. The Aggies lost to the Red Raid ers in overtime last year in Lub bock. Russell hurt A&M inside. He moves well without the ball, estab lishing position down low under neath the basket. If a team controls his inside game, then Russell moves out front. “He’s a great basketball player,” Metcalf said. “He beat us in that tourney game two years ago, and he won both ball games for them last year. But our guys know what he can do and I think they’ll respond to the challenge.” Radio/hack STA-64 RECEIVER Reg. $249.95 Now $169.95 Save $80.00 Sale good through January 31, 1978 While Supply Lasts 1125 VILLA MARIA V7S4® | 846-7384 Open 10-6 Mon.-Sat. mnrm Radio /hack OF THE THIRD KIND rt COl UMB1A €MI Presfntation CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND A PHtUIPS Production A STEVEN SPIELBERG Film Starring RICHARD DREYFUSS also starring TERIGARR and MELINDA DILLON witti FRANCOIS TRUFFAUT as Larombe Musk: by JOHN WILLIAMS Visual effects by DOUGLAS TRUMBULL Director of Photography VILMOS ZSIGMONO A S C Produced by JULIA PHILLIPS and MICHAEL PHILLIPS Written and Directed by STEVEN SPIELBERG nn Panavisron Read the Den book CINEMA DA I LY 7:00,9:35 Sa+,Sun 2:00,4:30 ALSO 4 ACADEMY AWARD Sorry,No Passes,No Discouftt_s NOMINATIONS & No Guest Admissions One of the Year's ten best!"
