ur overall game was poor,”
Shelby Metcalf said. “We just
making mistakes. I’m disap-
:ed because we worked real
for this game,
wirl be game with Houston is a crit-
eca ® me for us. I don’t think you’ll be
K to convince Baylor of this, but
' lirt j re a much better team than we
‘ lc ' a l| red tonight.”
% stually the Bears played as
| s ar ” ly as the Aggies. Both teams
unple opportunities to blow the
‘wide open. Not until the final
it minutes of the ball game
ar ten gh was Baylor able to accom
plish that goal.
“Rebounding and good defensive
play helped us win this game,”
Baylor coach Jim Haller said.
“When you can out rebound the
most physical team in the league,
then you should win.”
Losing on the boards definitely
hurt the Aggies’ cause, but scoring
only four points in a six minute
stretch cost the cause.
“We just couldn’t score in those
final minutes,” Metcalf said. “Our
shot selection was alright, but they
just wouldn’t fall.”
The Aggies’ leading scorer, with
16 points, was Karl Godine. The
Houston Kashmere sensation kept
A&M in the ball game with his long
outside shots. Vernon Smith and
Joey Robinson finished second in
scoring with 10 points a piece.
“I think Joey played the best for
us,” Metcalf said. “He did a great
job on Vinnie Johnson.”
Johnson, the junior college hero
of Baylor, was held to just 17 points.

Johnson is a great outside shooter,
but doesn’t move well without the
ball.
“I am basically a set shooter,”
Johnson said. “I don’t think I shoot
as well if I’m moving. It doesn ’t mat
ter which side of the bucket I am on.
Both sides suit me,”
The leading scorer for the Bears
was not Johnson, but center Wen-
dall Mays. The junior from Ft.
Worth finished the night with 19
points. He also led the team in re
bounds with 11.
“Wendell played outstanding,’
Haller said. “When they concen
trated on Vinnie, that left the mid
dle open. Wendell just took advan
tage of the openings A&M gave
him.”
The Ags will have to close off
these openings if they are to com
pete with the Houston Cougars
Thursday night. Houston has a
strong ball club, despite its showing
against Arkansas.
“Well have to start at square
one,” Metcalf said. “We are way
behind on our schedule and it wor
ries me. There is no time to work on
the basics now because you are play
ing games. I just hope we can get
some good practices in before we
get into deep trouble.”
The major problem is turnovers.
A&M’s passes were sloppy against
the Bears. If the turnover problem
is prevelant against Houston, then it
could be a very long night for Met
calf s men.
