But, Mariano believes the basic chemical research that can bring about such development is being vastly underrated and undersup ported by the general public in its demands that science supply an swers to the problems of modern times. “People are naive to demand so much from scientists when they begin looking for solutions to impor tant technical problems,” he said. Applied technology can only be come available after a long process of basic research. “I think most people fail to realize this because they have little feeling about what basic research really in volves,” Mariano continued. “There’s an important distinction between scientists who discover new methods and engineers who must apply them to the problems.” A $30,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (formerly ERDA) is supporting Mariano’s re search on storage and conversion of solar energy. The novel process being developed takes advantage of chemical reactions which need to be explored thoroughly before they can be used. One liquid hydrocarbon system holds promise because of its appar ent ability to convert solar energy and store it indefinitely. The practi cal use of this, method is, however, years away because of the nature of basic research. As other examples of the impor tance of basic research, Mariano points to two more of his projects. One, supported by $66,000 from the National Science Foundation, carries the formidable title of N- vinyl Novel Intermediates in Organic Synthesis.” The second, $130,000 from the National In® of Health, is entitled “Syntlies Mitomycin Analogs.” Although both involve bus search in chemistry, neithei esoteric as it might first appeal major thrust of both is towatj velopment of useful synthetk pounds which can be usediuj chemotherapy or as antibii Mariano said. “As we can see, in almoi cases, basic research evenii paves the way for some technology,” he said. “Bulbas searchers want the public to that no applied research possible in the future withom going through a complex prow basic research today.” He cites the almost ubiqi hand-held “pocket” calculator example. Years ago, when culators were almost the size desk top, someone somewhen experimenting with the techn that now allows a calculator reduced until the only limit is eyesight of humans.
