gate; can’t miss it) was the white
frame structure generations of Texas
youths called “The Chicken Ranch.”
Seldom was the red light on the
door turned out or a prospective
customer turned away.
Today that light is burning once
again, hut the house that some of
Texas’ best known prostitutes called
home has new management, a new
location and an equally new busi
ness.
“The Chicken Ranch” — trans
ported lock, stock and bedpost to
Dallas — has become a chic restaur
ant.
These days Miss Edna — now a
hostess instead of a madam — finds
herself in familiar surroundings. Al
though surveying food rather than
sex, she says the same attitude
about her way of life still applies.
“You couldn’t be in the business if
you didn’t like people. If you didn’t
you would’ve been in a hell of a
shake,” said Miss Edna.
For 20 years she owned and oper
ated the Chicken Ranch when it was
the country’s oldest continually op
erated brothel. It sat for 60 years on
the outskirts of La Grange, a small
farming community in central
Texas. It was closed four years ago.
The building was moved to Dallas
where it became a wining and din
ing place, chic to most of its custom
ers because of its glamorous history.
It is tucked away on the outer edge
of a busy city street housing mostly
night spots.

Miss Edna, who worked as a pros
titute for nine years at the Chicken
Ranch before buying it, mingles
with customers and talks about the
old days.
She often renews acquaintances
with former customers. They bring
wives or girlfriends to see the house
and to introduce them to the slen
der polite woman who ran it.
“Wives aren’t as foolish as you
might think,’’ Miss Edna said.
“They’re broad-minded and they’re
not stupid enough to think their
husbands never visited a place like
the Chicken Ranch. ”
Edna Milton dressed in a pale
green pantsuit that matches her
eyes, looks like a young grand
mother now. She was born in Okla
homa during the Dust Bowl and is a
self-professed graduate of the “Uni
versity of the World.
But she learned to be a good
businesswoman and ran her brothel
on strict rules.
“A madam is nothing more than a
landlady,” she said.
The Chicken Ranch employed
nine to 12 prostitues and all fol
lowed the house rules. Miss Edna
didn’t allow liquor on the premises.
Her girls were not allowed to take
pills or other drugs. Meals were
served at regular hours.
“My rules only made good busi
ness sense, Miss Edna said.
While she talks to a handsome
couple — a slender dark-haired:
and his date, a pretty woman
striking blue eyes and coni
smile — Miss Edna is intei
by a college-age waitress.
“There’s another couple
to talk to you Edna,” the wain
whispered. “And here, auto|
these three (menus). Two of
are from Michigan and one is
South Carolina.”
Miss Edna obliged andcontii;
the conversation. She was as
she would be a madam again.
“Yes,” she said. “But noting
stiite because of the penal code, i
if people had the right to vote .
I think they should choosefortk;
selves if they want prostitution.li
1 would do it again.”
Miss Edna said she didn’tfeeh
bitterness towards the peoples|
campaigned to have her
closed.
"But I just wonder if people®!
Grange really wanted mypli
closed, ” she said.
Ironically, Miss Edna saidskel
never met the man credited i
closing the Chicken Ranch,)!»
Zindler, a Houston television
porter. Zindler led a campaign!
led to state law enforcementoli
finally shutting down the Ck
Ranch.
“He talked to the sheriff
people in town. But he neveroj
out to talk to me,” she said.
