Clarke last week announced the
appointment of Everett D.
Laird and John E. Howard as
assistants to the director.
Dr. Clarke said “both men add
needed expertise in fields of
communication, management
and resource analysis.”

achievement award
Laird will provide leadership
in resource analysis, involving
special projects for Clarke and
his assistants. Laird succeeds
Glenn Dowling, now on the stall
of President Jarvis Miller.
Howard, who has a joint ap
pointment with the Department
of Agricultural Communications,
will work closely with re
searchers, communicators and
the TAES director in finding new
and effective ways to communi
cate research programs and re
sults to producers and consum
ers. His media liaison work will
involve analysis of communica
tion techniques.
Laird has a background with
industry and has been in the
fields of resource analysis, logis
tics, management, personnel
administration, data processing
and computer products to
enhance management. He for
merly served as business man
ager for the Brazos Valley Region
Mental Health and Mental Re
tardation Center.
Howard’s 10 years experience
in the communication filed in
cludes three years a press secre
tary to Cong. Olin E. Teague
and press officer to the Science
and Technology Committee. He
also served as producer-director
at KAMU-TV, College Station,
Dr. Horace Van Cleave,
entomologist with the Texas Aj-
ricultural Experiment Station,is
this year’s winner of tie
Entomological Society
America Distinguished Achieve,
inent Award lor Teaching.
The honor came during the so
ciety’s national meeting wl
ended Dec. 1 in Washington
DC.
Van Cleave is the organiza
tion’s fourth recipient of the
award. The honor is presented:
each year to the member recog-
nized as the “outstanding ento
mology teacher in the Unit!
States, Canada and Mexico.’’
