Though some individuals left G. [ollie White Coliseum early, obvi- isly displeased, most stayed until leend — clapping their hands and njoying each note. Friday night, Firefall refuted the own Hall tradition of supplying ly country or easy listening lusic. Where Flash Cadillac flop- d, Firefall succeeded. When the concert began, the au- ience was relaxed, hoping for di- Revietv ersion from a crushing week of »sts. Some were hoping for a night feasy Eagles-like listening, while veryhody sat in anticipation as the anford Townsend Band opened the oncert. The loud, jazzy warm-up band as deafening; even so, it was an cceptable band. John Townsend bellowed high iotes with a clear voice, while the ix-man group never ceased mov- ig- Townsend either pounded his ynthesizer, twirling his hand sky- ard, or Sanford was doing deep nee bends at his keyboards. Although the rock they played as refreshing, it was so devas- atingly loud it hurt even with cot- snin the ears — the thunder possi- ly an attempt to compensate for avernous G. Hollie s tinny acous- :s. Ending with “Smoke from a Dis- mt Fire, the group received a landing ovation. During a short itermission between acts, frisbees nd a large beach ball amused the rowd. Firefall opened their act with “So ifg-” Some in the crowd expected soft lusic along with favorites such as Cinderella and “Just Remember 1 ove You,” but were jolted by the ell-executed heavy slide guitar nusic. Lead guitarist Jock Bartley led le band in flashy jams, with Rick oberts, main vocalist, on acoustic Hilar. Roberts harmonized well with arry Burnett, on electric and loustic guitars. And a saxophone id flute spiced up some of the mgs. The lighting was also fair. But the concert wasn’t faultless.
