From graduation processional and
diploma to wedding march and rice.
This is the route many Aggies
choose.
Graduation time also means wed
ding time to Col. Logan E. Weston,
religious life coordinator and secre
tary for the Student Y at Texas A&M
University.
Weston estimates that he has per
formed approximately 2,300 wed
dings since he was ordained by the
Congregational Christian Church in
1941. He held about 1,900 of these
since he retired from the military
and came to Texas A&M in 1968. He
has performed weddings at Texas
A&M’s All Faiths Chapel for nine
years. He usually holds three or four

weddings each weekend.
“Peak loads come around com
mencement time. The second week
in December and May are common
times to have around 30 weddings in
one weekend.
“Around 10 weddings are held
each day — Friday, Saturday and
Sunday,” Weston said. “A lot of
these are graduating corps members
whose families come from all over
the world to see them graduate and
commisioned; so it is a good time to
plan a wedding.”
About 20 marriages are performed
each year for faculty and staff mem
bers and about 10 percent of the
weddings each year are for foreign
students, said Weston. “We get
quite a few former students, also.
“I perform most of the weddings
but if another minister comes I still
direct because there are lots of things
that can go wrong. I always check

every minute detail,’ he said.
“Corps men like to play tricks on
their buddies. We had a groom
whose friends picked him up to give
him a ride to the wedding and he
arrived three minutes before the
ceremony. His friends had stripped
him of his hat, tie and belt, Weston
said.
Weston cheeks the soles of the
groom s shoes before the ceremony
because in the past white tape has
been put on them with “HE written
on the left shoe and “LP written on
the right. If the shoes have this on
them Weston tells the groom not to
kneel for prayer but to remain stand
ing.
•Often someone in the crowd will
give an Aggie “WHOOP” when the
groom kisses the bride. "We try to
avoid these pranks by warning the
groom that these things happen,” he
said.
Weston coordinates the wedding
so everyone will know how they fit
into the program. For corps mem
bers weddings he drills saber men in
forming the saber arch the bride and
groom will walk under.
“Brides frequently choose maroon
and white as wedding colors, espe
cially for military weddings, said
Weston. “Usually, the groom’s cake
is chocolate and has maroon icing
with white letters and almost always
has a TAMU insignia.
Weston said some corps members
requested the “Aggie War Hymn"
he played as the recessional for their
weddings. This is not done because
“this is a sacred ordinance and we
want it to he held in a proper atmo
sphere.
Weddings at the All Faiths Chapel
are scheduled on a first come first
serve basis and can be scheduled up
to 10 months in advance.
When the chapel is reserved, one
hour is scheduled for a rehearsal
(usually the day before the wedding),
and two hours are scheduled for the
wedding with the ceremony taking
from 15-18 minutes. The bride has
20 minutes to dress, the photo
grapher has 20 minutes to take pic
tures of the bride and the groom is
asked to arrive 20 minutes before the
ceremony.
Weston said that it is very impor
tant for everyone to know their part
in the wedding because sometimes
weddings are scheduled 15 minutes
apart. This gives florists little time to
take down and set up new flower
arrangements.
The number of weddings per
formed at the chapel has increased
each year. Nine years ago ap
mately 45 weddings
formed. The increase
enrollment and the fact thattl;
versity has gone coed has inns
the average number of wedi
250 per year, said Weston.
“I insist on one or twoh
